It seems that everyone is concerned with the greatest guitarist or drummer, but few people take the time to consider the great back-up bands that have served as the backbone to many of the most legendary of artists....

To think that the Eagles began as a back-up for Linda Rondstadt or that The Band originally backed Bob Dylan... So who would you consider the greatest back-up bands...

Obviously I have to choose the near & dear...

The E-Street Band (Bruce Springsteen)

after that though I have to say...

Doulble Trouble (Stevie Ray Vaughn)
Crazy Horse (Neil Young)

Wow, tough one...because I agree with everyone you guys have mentioned, but would like to add some incarnations of Ozzy's back-up band:

Zakk Wylde, Mike Inez, Randy Castillo, Jon Sinclair(keyboards) circa No More Tears
&
Randy Rhodes, Bob Daisley, Tommy Aldridge circa Blizzard of Oz

here's another good one, in the bluegrass category: Union Station, which backs up Allison Krauss

EDIT: Damn, you can never forget the Experience! Noel Redding/Mitch Mitchell... Band of Gypsy's with Billy Cox and Buddy Miles

Does Five count?

As in "Ben Folds' Five"... or would it actually be "four" not counting Ben himself?

I vote for Bruce Dickinson's second band after he left Iron Maiden...

Why front a loser when you can backup a star...

EDIT: Seriously, Froy, why make the discussion when you corner 2/3 of it?

Besides the Heartbreakers, and Experience....

WTF do you want?? The Culture Club??????

If you give it some thought, there's a lot of good back-ups that have been put together. Sometimes they're just not as obvious, or you don't even think of them as supporting bands.

um, i believe that actually would've been two, and now it's none, he seems to be doing it all himself these days.

Taking it in another direction, you can't beat what Miles Davis had behind him during the Quintet years:

John Coltrane, Philly Joe Jones, Red Garland, and Paul Chambers.

Nice.

The only problem with a topic like this is you have to make sure it's a backup band. Wookie, that is no doubt a great band, but in no way is it a BACKUP band. Each member of that group was an important part of that band and took their turns in the forfront. Miles was the LEADER, but the other guys were not a backup band.

That's like saying the Grateful Dead is a backup band.

I will agree with the Experience. They were solid as a rock. Also what about the Dead Kennedy's? They weren't the greatest musicians in the world, but again, they were solid. I would also like to say Rush, but again....I'm into the problem of them not really being a backup band, but each musician having their own role.

How about REM. Before Berry left of course.

the Blues Brothers Band... a fine collection of great musicians... Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn, Blue Lou Marini, Matt "Guitar" Murphy, Paul Scheaffer(even though he's a dick & very un-funny)...the list goes on & on...

I totally agree with that statement...
But Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers playing as a backup band to Johnny Cash (on his last two records released by American Recordings-Rick Rubin's label) is totally fuggin amazing.

More Teen Testimonial:I have to admit, when I first suggested anal sex to my girlfriend, she looked at me like I was crazy. I offered to double-wrap, use plenty of AstroGlide, but she was still totally freaked over the idea of it. Then she made a deal with me: If I'd bend over for her strap-on, she'd bend over for me. Agreed, that's why I prefaced it by saying it was another direction. It's the nature of the beast that a jazz band shares the load, but simply in that it was named for Miles, the others have a lower profile. Also, the same 4 guys together backed Sonny Rollins at one time, as well, which sort of makes them a unit.
