Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00 | Chuck Schuldiner, founder of DEATH and CONTROL DENIED, and considered to be one of the founding fathers of the death metal genre, lost his battle with cancer on December 13th. He passed away at 4pm EST. I Met Chuck a couple Years ago on Long Island, and he told me this "Remeber this, Death is forever...we're not" Crystal Mountain Built from blind faith Passed down from self-induced fantasy Turn a page to justify Conjuring powers - it opens wide On your seventh day, Is that how it's donw? Twisting your eyes to perceive All that you want To assume from ignorance Inflicting wounds with your Cross-turned dagger Inside crystal mountain Evil takes its form Inside crystal mountain Commandments are reborn All the traps are set to confine All who get in the way of the divine In sight and in mind of the hypocrite A slave to the curse forever confined Shatter the myth Don't cut yourself On your words against Dreams made of steel Stronger than any faith That inflicts pain and fear Is that how it's done? Twisting your eyes to perceive All that you want To assume from ignorance Inflicting wounds with your Cross-turned dagger Inside crystal mountain Evil takes its form Inside crystal mountain Commandments are reborn AIM me "DON'T LET THE TIME PASS WAITIN' FOR THE ANSWER" - Fear Factory This message was edited by windowlck on 12-17-01 @ 7:40 PM

Psychopath Registered: Jun. 01 | Chuck's music and writing with Death is some of the most moving and transcendent work, not just in metal, but in music in general in the last decade or so. It's an understatement to say he'll be missed. While his earlier writing was Cannibal Corpse-esque juvenile (but fun) gore: They torture you by Cutting off your cock When you're dead They'll feast upon your flesh Your brains they'll Eat and chop his lyricism later moved more towards realism and personal feelings, while the music drifted away from traditional thrash/death, and into a much more classically influenced and technical style. In 1995, Death recorded "Symbolic", which is one of the greatest metal albums of all time, IMO. Even thoush Chuck left the music world "on top", with his music never denegrating from album to album (which is common in metal, and almost no other form of music), it's very sad that there will never be any more music written by him, or performed by him, and that he (like any cancer victim) had to endure such a struggle at the end. Also sad is the fact that James Murphy, who played guitar on Death's "Spiritual Healing" album, has also recently been diagnosed with cancer. I don't mean to dwell But I can't help myself When I feel the vibe And taste a memory Of a time in life When years seemed to stand still I close my eyes And sink within myself Relive the gift of precious memories In need of a fix called innocence When did it begin? The change to come was undetectable The open wounds expose the importance of our innocence A high that can never be bought or sold Symbolic acts - so vivid Yet at the same time Were invisible Savor what you feel and what you see Things that may not seem important now But may be tomorrow Do you remember when Things seemed so eternal? Heroes were so real... Their magic frozen in time The only way to learn Is be aware and hold on tight I close my eyes And sink within myself Relive the gift of precious memories In need of a fix called innocence When did it begin? The change to come was undetectable The open wounds expose the importance of our innocence A high that can never be bought or sold Symbolic acts - so vivid Yet at the same time Were invisible :(

O&A Board Regular Registered: Sep. 00 | Chuck was a truly underrated musician who play from the mind and soul, not from other people's fame. His music, although not for the feeble minded or the mainstream, had a quality that was unique to the fans. Chuck was also responsible for giving us people, like guitarist James Murphy, who played for Obituary & Disincarnate, now plays for the band Testament, as well as bassist Terry Butler who plays for Six Feet Under. He also introduced us to Sean Reinert and Paul Masividal of the former band Cynic. Working with CHuck was also Steve Digorgio, former bassist for Sadus who also worked alongside Chuck in Control Denied and currently plays for Testament with James Murphy. Now, I leave you with a song from Death's finest works Human, with the song Lack of comprehension. LACK OF COMPREHENSION A condemming fear strikes down Things they cannot understand An excuse to cover up weaknesses that lie within Lies Laying your guilt and pain On people that had no part in the molding of a life That creates its destruction Lies Right before your very eyes A reflections of the mistakes To the end you will deny Your part in the demise of a life Lack of Comp- rehension Thriving on your cliché Compelled by self- resentment Reaching into the minds of those that created The depression in which they In which they drowned their flesh and blood Lies So easy to blame the Ever- lasting fear on a pathetic attempt To just- ify the ending of life Lies Right before your very eyes A reflections of the mistakes To the end you will deny Your part in the end of a life Lack of Comp- rehension Thriving on your cliché Compelled by self- resentment This is what I do now. Why? Because I can, that's why!

Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00 | According to MTV.com: Chuck Schuldiner, a pioneering force in death metal and grindcore as the vocalist and guitarist for Death, has died after a lengthy battle with a brain tumor. The seminal metal figure passed away Thursday at the age of 34. Schuldiner was diagnosed with pontine giloma, a rare type of brain tumor, in 1999 and struggled to afford treatment (see "Death Metal Godfather Struggles To Fund Lifesaving Surgery"). The guitarist eventually underwent surgery for the tumor in January of 2000, and appeared to be recovering well in the months following the operation. Earlier this year, however, Schuldiner's condition worsened as his tumor continued to grow and proved inoperable. Schuldiner's plight provided a harsh reminder of the struggle of artists working without health insurance, and the metal community soon rallied around the ailing guitarist. An array of artists including Kid Rock, Korn, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Marilyn Manson, Godsmack, Disturbed, Pantera and Slipknot kicked in merchandise for an auction benefiting Schuldiner (see "Korn, Kid Rock, Slipknot Reach Out To Ailing Death Frontman"). Chimaira also pitched in, soliciting donations for Schuldiner while on the road with Spineshank, and numerous death metal acts around the world organized benefit concerts. Schuldiner formed Death in his native Florida in 1983 and released the band's first album, Scream Bloody Gore, on Combat Records in 1987. The group released a total of five albums on that label between 1987 and 1993 before jumping to Roadrunner Records for 1995's Symbolic. The band's most recent effort, Sound of Perseverance, was released on Nuclear Blast Records in 1998. Schuldiner was the lone constant in Death's rotating lineup, and he surrounded himself with some of the group's supporting cast when forming the more melodic Control Denied in 1996. That group released one album, 1999's The Fragile Art of Existence. Soon after the album's release, Schuldiner's tumor was discovered. "Chuck's music was really important to me growing up," Slipknot vocalist Corey Taylor once said of Schuldiner's influence. "It was really intricate and interesting." A memorial Web site has been produced in honor of Schuldiner (at www.emptywords.org), and fans can post their thoughts in an online book of condolences that will be sent to Schuldiner's family. The Charles Schuldiner Medical Fund (established to help the guitarist tackle his medical bills) will continue to accept donations. Fans can contribute at www.hammerheartamerica.com. —Robert Mancini, with additional reporting by Iann Robinson AIM me "DON'T LET THE TIME PASS WAITIN' FOR THE ANSWER" - Fear Factory
