It seems like Dave Grohl is appearing everywhere...next up, he plays most drum tracks on the new Queens of the Stone Age album. They're comparing this album to a Death Metal "Supernatural". With Lemmy and Tom Morello and especially WINO!!! on board, it's probably going to kick some serious ass!

The project started about a year ago, when Grohl and Adam Kasper (engineer, mixer and producer of the Foo Fighters' 1999 album, There Is Nothing Left to Lose) recorded seven instrumental metal tracks in Grohl's basement studio as something of a response to the LP's first single, "Learn to Fly," which the former Nirvana drummer described as "the most middle-of-the-road piece of sh-- I've ever written in my life." "[I thought,] 'It's so boring,' and 'I can't believe it's the first single,' and 'It doesn't represent the rest of the record,' " Grohl recalled. "So I was just kinda itching to record something that I was really excited about. I love the Foo Fighters record, but there's a part of me that's always been kind of this metalhead kid." Inspired by Santana's Supernatural, Grohl set out to make the "death metal" version of the multi-artist project by first coming up with a wish list of artists to contribute to his instrumental tracks, then sending out tapes to all who agreed to participate. Grohl, who claimed metal was a natural progression for him after growing up with bands such as Bad Brains, D.R.I. and Corrosion of Conformity, admitted he was a bit surprised at the response from his heavy metal heroes.

"I consider myself such a stupid, middle-of-the-road, alternative-rock idiot, I thought most of these people would be like, 'No, he's a dork' or 'No, he's a jerk,' " Grohl explained. "But they all agreed to do it." So Grohl and Kasper, along with friend and Chavez frontman Matt Sweeney, re-entered the home studio and laid down five more instrumental tracks to round out the project. Other artists on the receiving end of the Probot tapes are Cronos from Venom, Eric Wagner (Trouble), Lee Dorian, Snake (Voivod) and Wino (Obsessed/Spirit Caravan).

Whether Probot's "death metal Supernatural" will ever surface remains to be seen. At the very least, Grohl said his metal foray is likely to impact the next Foo Fighters album by making it "a little harder, sludgier." If nothing else, Grohl is having a blast creating it. "It's kind of a dream come true," Grohl said. "It's like going to one of those stupid baseball camps where some executive businessman gets to play with the pros." I think it all started with the Declaration of Independence -- the idea that we had the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That pursuit is what took America from the revolution to the computer age in 200 years. But the progress has come at a price. The obvious being the people that were exploited to make it possible; the not so obvious being us, the first group of people that were given no obvious frontiers to conquer. We hear stories that about the good old days that don't seem to apply anymore. It's a generation gap that leaves us without role models. But the bright side is that without role models, there are no roles. Maybe that's what the 60s were all about -- getting rid of the roles. But what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, the choices become overwhelming. Sometimes it just makes everything feel hopeless. So we destroy our bodies in the search of an ideal. Try to salvage relationships that don't work. We feel we must do something, instead of doing something that we feel. It is the prison of self-imposed momentum, and the sad part is that we get used to it. It reminds me of a song I heard the other day. It's called "The Going Nowhere Fast." But the people I have met here have shown me another side of Nowhere. They've pointed out the beautiful irony that stagnation makes it easy to stop and smell the roses, if we just let it. What would we be if we had nothing to rebel against? Well we could finally be ourselves, the first group of people who stopped looking for the answers long enough to appreciate the questions. And all we have to do is to make our own Declaration of Independence. We can embrace the right to life and liberty by simply realizing that happiness exists -- not to pursue, but to accept. After that the only challenge would be to make sure with the rest of our lives that we weren't just another fad. I don't know, it's an idea. What do you think?

This sounds like it could kick serious ass! I never liked the Foo Fighters, but I thought Grohl was a good drummer with Nirvana. And King Diamond, Tom Araya, and Lemmy together? Sounds like a dream team...in 1989 ;).
Seriously though, thanks spit, I'm looking forward to this.
