I was eight years old and running with a dime in my hand
into the busstop
to pick up a paper for my old man
I’d sit on his lap in that big old Buick and steer as we drove through town
He’d tousle my hair and say son take a good look around this is your hometown
This is your hometown
This is your hometown
This is your hometown

In ’65 tension was running high, at my high-school
There was a lot of fights between the black and white
There was nothing you could do
Two cars at a light on a Saturday night, in the back seat there was a gun
Words were passed, in a shotgun blast
Troubled times had come, to my hometown
My hometown
My hometown
My hometown

Now Main Street’s white washed windows
and vacant stores
seems like there ain’t nobody
wants to come down here no more
They’re closing down the textile mill across the railroad tracks
Foreman says these jobs are going boys and they ain’t coming back to your hometown
Your hometown
Your hometown
Your hometown

Last night me and Kate we laid in bed talking about getting out
Packing up our bags maybe heading south
I’m 35, we got a boy of our own now
Last night I sat him up, behind the wheel and said son take a good look around, this is your hometown

Thanks Froy for reminding me that it's time to take out Bruce!!! the warm weather's coming!

Thunder Road

The screen door slams
Mary's dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch
As the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside
Darling you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty, but hey you're alright
Oh and that's alright with me
You can hide 'neath your covers
And study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers
Throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets
Well now I'm no hero
That's understood
All the redemption I can offer girl
Is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey what else can we do now
Except roll down the window
And let the wind blow back your hair
Well the night's busting open
These two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back
Heaven's waiting on down the tracks
Oh oh come take my hand
Riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh oh Thunder Road, oh Thunder Road
Oh Thunder Road
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey I know it's late, we can make it if we run
Oh Thunder Road, sit tight take hold
Thunder RoadWell I got this guitar
And I learned how to make it talk
And my car's out back
If you're ready to take that long walk
From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride it ain't free
And I know you're lonely
For words that I ain't spoken
But tonight we'll be free
All the promises'll be broken
There were ghosts in the eyes
Of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road
In the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines roaring on
But when you get to the porch they're gone
On the wind, so Mary climb in
It's a town full of losers
And I'm pulling out of here to win

Who wants to meet me at Federici's in Freehold for some Pizza, or Lasagna?
:)

my fave Bruce Tune.

GROWIN' UP

I stood stone-like at midnight suspended in my masquerade
I combed my hair till it was just right and commanded the night brigade
I was open to pain and crossed by the rain and I walked on a crooked crutch
I strolled all alone through a fallout zone and came out with my soul untouched
I hid in the clouded wrath of the crowd but when they said "Sit down" I stood up.
Ooh-ooh growin' up

The flag of piracy flew from my mast, my sails were set wing to wing
I had a jukebox graduate for first mate, she couldn't sail but she sure could sing,
I pushed B-52 and bombed `em with the blues with my gear set stubborn on standing
I broke all the rules, strafed my old high school, never once gave thought to landing,
I hid in the clouded wrath of the crowd but when they said "Come down" I threw up
Ooh-ooh growin' up

I took month-long vacations in the stratosphere and you know it's really hard to hold your breath.
I swear I lost everything I ever loved or feared, I was the cosmic kid in full costume dress
Well, my feet they finally took root in the earth but I got me a nice little place in the stars
And I swear I found the key to the universe in the engine of an old parked car
I hid in the mother breast of the crowd but when they said "Pull down" I pulled up
Ooh-ooh growin' up. Ooh-ooh growin' up

My Hometown: Great song. I'm watching this stuff happen to my town in Jersey. Thunder Road: My favorits song. Growin up: Great song.

2nd Favorite:
Used Cars

My little sister's in the front seat, with an ice cream cone.
My ma's in the back seat sitting all alone.
My pa steers her slow out of the lot,
For a test-drive down Michigan Avenue.

Now my mom she fingers her wedding band,
Watches the salesman stare at my old man's hands.
He's tellin' us all about the break he'd give us,
If he could, but he just can't.
Well if I could I swear I know just what I'd do.

Now mister the day the lottery I win,
I ain't ever gonna ride in no used car again.

Now the neighbors come from near and far,
As we pull up in our brand new used car.
I wish he'd just hit the gas and let out a cry,
Tell 'em all the can kiss our asses goodbye.

Dad he sweats the same job from mornin' to morn,
Me I walk home on the same dirty streets where I was born.
Up the block I can hear my little sister in the front seat blowin' that horn,
The sounds echoin' all down Michigan Avenue.

Now mister the day my number comes in,
I ain't ever gonna ride in no used car again.

I have Jersey girl on the 8/12/99 bootleg also...but if you want lyrics for it, check a Tom Waits site since he wrote it.

Bruce!!
gotta love "Tenth Avenue freeze-out"
Tear drops on the city
bad scooter searching for his groove
seem like the whole world walking pretty
and you cant find the room to move
well everybody better move over, that's all
'cause i'm running on the bad side
and i got my back to the wall
Tenth Avenue freeze-out, tenth avenue freeze-out

i'm to lazy to type the whole thing .. another good verse though.....

when the change was made uptown
and the Big man joined the band
from the coastline to the city
all the little pretties raise their hands
i'm gonna sit back right easy and laugh
when scooter and the big man bust this city in half with the tenth avenue freeze out......

Bruce ROCKS..
