Rapper Eminem Gets Two Years' Probation

MT. CLEMENS, Mich. (Reuters) - Rap superstar Eminem was sentenced to two years probation on Tuesday for carrying a concealed weapon during a brawl outside a Detroit-area nightclub last summer.

Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Bruce Mathers III, pleaded guilty in February after prosecutors agreed to drop a felony assault charge filed after he allegedly pistol-whipping a man he saw kissing his wife, Kimberly Mathers.

The Grammy Award-winning artist, known for misogynistic and homophobic lyrics, could have faced up to five years in prison on the gun charge, but prosecutors recommended a sentence of only 120 to 180 days since he had no prior convictions.

Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Antonio Viviano opted instead to sentence the 28-year-old rapper to two years' probation, warning him that he could face up to five years in prison for any violation of the terms of the sentence.

"I consider probation to be punishment. I don't think it's a lark, and I don't think it's a slap on the wrist," the judge said.

MATHERS WANTS CASE BEHIND HIM

One of the few white musicians to make it big in the hip-hop world, Mathers told reporters after his sentencing he thought the court had treated him fairly, and said he was looking forward to putting the case behind him.

"I'm just glad to get this over with, to get this behind me and spend time with my little girl and making music," he said.

Mathers reached a preliminary divorce agreement with his wife last month that gives him joint custody of their 5-year-old daughter.

Viviano ordered Mathers to pay financial penalties in the case including a $5,000 fee to cover court costs, a $2,500 fine, $60 to a crime victims fund and $30 a month to cover state supervision fees.

Viviano also cautioned Mathers he will be subject to regular counseling and drug tests to ensure he is not guilty of alcohol abuse or the use of any controlled substance without a prescription.

Mathers, whose songs have been dubbed "pulp diction" by some critics because of violent lyrics that are often misogynistic or homophobic, was also ordered to stay away from firearms or any other weapons for the duration of his probation.
