OK, so I had the last 50 aquired thread, but now I'm tired of that. So it's a new week, and I've bought more CD's. Post your own. Here goes...

Sebadoh - Bakesale
1994 Lou Barlow's(Folk Implosion) band. This album is nice. I've only listened to most of it once through. But the album is really good. Hard to describe their style, they have kind of a unique indie sound.

Skeleton Key - Skeleton Key
1999 This is a 5 song demo they did. This is hard to find, but I recommend it. I saw them play for the first time back in the spring with The Melvins. Nice tight rocking band. Pretty much unknown though. The drummer uses lots of weird instruments and crap to play on so they get an interesting sound. This is a local NYC band, and I've heard they play in the area ofen. I'm going to have to check them out again.

Alternative Tentacles Compelation
This is fairly new. This is a great punk album. Nuff said.

Tricky - Blowback
2001 OK, I don't like this album much so far. I've listened to it like 3 times, and it's waaaayyyy to commercial for me. He has some really good songwriting on here, but I'm just disappointed. They are too radio friendly.

Cake - Comfort Eagle
2001 Nice album from them. Been waiting for this one. They have kind of a jazzy feel. Personally I think it's a better album overall from some of their previous.

Maynard: If you like Sebadoh like I do, then get "Harmacy". That is probably their best album to date. I recomend the songs Ocean, and Willing to Wait.

The AT comp. sound interesting, any Dead Kennedys on it? or Jello spoken word?

I got Janes Addiction: Nothing Shocking.
This is a good album but the slow stuff really drags and it doesn't pick up until the 3rd track then you get hit with another slow song. I like "Standing in the Shower..thinking" and of course "Mountain song". I hear the other album is better though.

The Living End: Roll On
As a punk fan, I am really disappointed in this album. Besides the catchy title song, the other songs are so formulated and alike. It's like they try to be the Clash, but come up short.

That just what I think.

You Give Me Head, It Makes it Worse. Take out Your Fucking Retainer, put it in Your Purse. ---Jello Biafra

I was waiting til I got home to do this cuz it’ll take a while. Since I listen to a lot of stuff you guys aren’t at all familiar with, for the most part, desert/stoner/doom rock for lack of a better term is what I’m really into now, here’s a review of some of the stuff I’ve bought recently, in case you’re interested….hmmm, where should I start?

  • Halfway to Gone – High Five: Bluesy slide guitar, Southern rock mixed with sludge and a lot of low end is the best way to describe them. They’re from Long Branch, NJ (have a show at the Brighton Bar there Saturday BTW) and play songs about drinking and smoking and all of those better things in life lol

  • Sea of Green – Time to Fly: Bluesy and psychedelic, mellow and laid back, but still heavy at the same time (ok, I know that makes no sense, you just gotta listen) They do a pretty good cover of Pink Floyd’s Breathe. The singer’s great.

  • Church of Misery – Master of Brutality: Just heavy doom rock is the only way to describe this…a good mix of blues and metal, with some trippy effects thrown in here and there. Lots of lyrics about serial killers, though, singer sounds like Lemmy gargling acid (and they’re from Japan, weird)

  • Che – Sounds of Liberation: Great laid back album, like one long jam. One of the best drummers in the biz plays guitar and sings (Brant Bjork of Fu Manchu), a great drummer (Alfredo Hernandez from Kyuss/QOTSA), and an amazing bassist (Dave Dinsmore of Unida). These guys are a desert/stoner rock super-group.

  • …and just because I think everyone should own this album: Kyuss – Welcome to Sky Valley: I could listen to only this album forever and still find something new each time I listen to it. There’s really something for everyone in this, IMHO it is in the same league in recording perfection as Dark Side of the Moon…this album is almost a spiritual experience. It’s heavy, it’s psychedelic, it’s bluesy, they take a page from Sabbath’s book. Each song pretty much flows flawlessly into the next, the album is divided into 3 parts, with 3 or 4 songs to each part. These guys play a major role in influencing the above bands I mentioned.

This is not about image, This is not about fashion,
This is not about money, this is not a popularity contest
This is about sex, drugs and rock and fuckin roll
That will blow your mind with its honest passion, creativity and soul
This is a heavy rock re-evolution that starts where rock was before
Glam metal, post grunge wanna-be's and rap metal fucked everything up
Punk, grunge, doom and sludge kept the fire burning in the "dark years"
and now combine with a fuzzed out 70's psychedelic groove to create a new and intense Rock 'N' Roll vibe

Cake - Comfort Eagle - Cake is one of my favorite bands of all time. I have seen them twice in concert, and they are one of the few bands that can put out a CD without all but one song sucking ass. Short Skirt/Long Jacket is the fucking groove! Another awesome CD from one of my favorite bands of all time. 9 out of 10

The Crystal Method - Tweekend - For months I have been waiting for this one, and I would like to say, I was a little dissapointed in TCM. There are a few songs that rock, but what's with all the fucking guest singers? When I buy a Techno CD, I don't want to hear singing - Just samples and damn good mixes. This CD doesn't even come close to their previous CD - Vegas, which was all that, a bag of chips, and fucking dessert. I expected better. 6.5 out of 10

To respond to a few things in here....

Yes, there is a DK song on the Alternative Tentacles disc.

The TCM album sounds like the new Tricky album. There are some really good tracks, but there are just way too many guest artists on it. They take away from the album I think. Kinda like what Moby did with Play and many artists are doing lately. It's just another gimmick to sell records right now. Why do you think Fred Durst gets so much work. Not because he's actually that good, but because people are looking for a gimmick.

Bjork - Selmasongs
This album is friggin fantastic. If you like Bjork, it's a must have. If you don't like her style, then you may still like this album, but try and listen to it first. It's the soundtrack fom "Dancer In The Dark" so you can rent it to hear the music.

O Brother Where Art Thou - Soundtrack
What a great soundtrack. All old songs from the American south. This one is an aquired taste. It most certainly won't appeal to everyone.

Aphex Twin - Ventolin
Aphex Twin is a sort of Experimental Drum and Bass, meets Breakbeats. Some of his stuff is really out there, yet others seem like a moment of total clarity in this otherwise cluttered musical landscape we listen to every day.

Slow Dive - Souvlaki
This band has a very mellow groove, while still keeping their British pop roots.

Slow Dive - 5 EP (In Mind Remixes)
This is a dance style remix album.

The Moog Cookbook
This is a cool album. It's a very lighthearted album of cover songs done on old Moog keyboards. Most are done in a sort of lounge style. It's very fun and lighthearted.

Here we go again....OK, I may need to see someone about this. I need to go to "Musiclovers Anonymous".

Bjork - Gling-Glo
This is an very early album from her. 1990 I think, before her solo career. It is a jazz album. I think it's fantastic, but if you don't like jazz, or hearing a foreign language, forget it. There's only 2 songs sung in English and that's because they're American songs.

Fluke - Progressive History X
I started listening to this band about 5 years ago when I saw them play a show. They are very funky. This is a compelation album of their stuff from all their albums. Fluke is a real band that plays "electronica".(i really hate that term) They have a harder edge though then most dance type music. Great stuff.
