(AP) - Heat had not been ruled out as a possible cause in the death of a 13-year-old football player who collapsed and died at practice, authorities said Thursday. Jasper County Coroner Billy Norris said the body of Jamarious Berez Bennett, who died Wednesday, was sent to Atlanta for an autopsy. Lawandra Bennett, the mother of the eighth-grader, said her son did not have a history of health problems. "All I know is what his coaches and stuff were telling me: He wasn't feeling well so they told him to go to the sidelines and take his helmet off. They said his vision got blurry, and when the trainer went over to where he was, he collapsed. That's what I was told," she said. Jasper schools Superintendent Jay Brinson said the middle school team's trainer performed CPR while a student used a cell phone to call 911. When an ambulance arrived, another coach carried Bennett to the rescue crews. Bennett was taken to Jasper Memorial Hospital but could not be revived. However, im sure this type of tragic stuff happens every year, we just dont hear about it because a pro player never dies. Now that one has, more attention is being brought to this, and the attention is not needed. Football is a tough sport. Shit happens. But, the shit shouldnt be the focal point of this sport. | Hanger-On Registered: Feb. 01 | Teen-age football players died from heart problems, not heat ---------------------------------------------------------- Associated Press -- A 13-year-old football player in Georgia died because of a birth defect, not the heat, and a 14-year-old player died in Texas from an enlarged heart, autopsies found. Jamarious Derez Bennett of Monticello, Ga., died Wednesday during practice because of a defective coronary artery, Dr. Kris Sperry, the state's chief medical examiner, said Monday. Authorities had said a heat index near 100 might have played a role in the death. Routine physical exams cannot detect the defect, which occurs in about 1 of every 5,000 people, Sperry said. The other player, Leonard Carter, who played at Lamar High in Houston, died during a football scrimmage Saturday because of an enlarged heart, authorities said Monday. Heat played a minimal role in the death and his temperature was 100.7, not 107 as family members said they were told previously, Harris County medical examiner Joye Carter said. Meanwhile, autopsy results on a 15-year-old football player at Luling High School in Texas won't be available for several more days at the earliest. Steven Taylor died Friday. Officials have said they don't believe heat was a factor in the death. ---------------------------------------------------------- How can heat not play a role/play a small factor in a death in 100 degree+ weather? | O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | I'm far from a doctor, but if that kid had a heart problem to begin with, he shouldn't have been playing football. My brother plays and has to go for a complete physical before each season...obviously the heat is to blame, but the kid should have never been on the field. why do I say I'm fine when it's obvious I'm not? why's it so hard to tell you what I want? why can't you just read my mind? | ||||
