I posted this in the Tech. Forum but I have only gotten six views since yesterday and 4 of them were mine, so I'll post here.

We have three computers in my house and I wanted to network them so we can all share the same cable connection. I think this would be cheaper than getting two more modems and paying an extra 60 a month.
The three systems we have are:
1) I'm running ME on a 1.4 pentium 4.
2) Roommate is getting a Compaq Presario. He doesn't know what os he has or the processor. I would imagine XP.
3) Imac running osX.
Now the questions,
1) Are there going to be compatability issues running three different operating systems?
2) Will I be able to control how much bandwidth each computer receives? I am running somehere around 1200 right now and I could probably get away with giving them about 150 each leaving me with 900 which is plenty for me.
3) Am I going to have wires running through out the house? This would annoy me. I have heard about wireless networks, are these expensive?
4) What type of hardware will I need to do this?
5) Will I be able to do this myself? I don't know if anyone has seen any of my past topics but they include, How do I run scandisk?, so you can see I'm not the most computer savy person on the board but given detailed instructions I'm sure I could handle it.

I'm sure I will have more questions but I can't think of anything off the top of my head right now. I would like to thank you all in advance for sharing your knowledge with me.

There. Another "view". Happy now? :)

Go here . There's plenty of info to answer all of your questions and more. Keep in mind that there's a reason people get paid to do that kinda stuff.
Good Luck

Edit: Almost forgot. You might want to pick this up as well

Answers:

1) No.
2) No. Bandwidth is dictated by what you're downloading, when. So if one download can utilize the whole thing, it will, until someone else tries to download something, then it splits. You probably won't ever even notice.
3) Wireless routers aren't expensive, but the cards for the PC can be.
4) Easiest hardware setup would be to have the cable modem output to a router. If you get a router with a built-in hub, then you already have a hub too. If not, the router will output to a hub. Computers plug into the hub. They all need network cards.
5) Most of the shit sets itself up pretty easily.

And in the future, be more fucking patient. It's the weekend. Maybe people have shit to do on a Saturday afternoon... then the party last night.... you could have given it till sometime on Monday before getting flakey about it.

I'll move this to TS in a little bit.

Edit: Okay, it's been an hour.

Thank you for the answers. I took a look at the 3com site and the cards are expensive but I'm not paying for it so who cares. I think I know what to do, does this sound right? I get a wireless router, then I throw a Wi-Fi certified lan card into each comp and I'm pretty much done. All that's left is to enter the modems ip address into a browser and it'll set itself up.
The price for the cards are 215 each and the router was about 500, Does this sound right? I want to make sure I was looking at the correct things. router and card

Sorry for the impatience.

No plugging IPs into anything. At least you shouldn't have to. The router should automatically detect the cable modem's IP, and assign IPs to the wireless clients (the PCs).

Just make sure that card has drivers for Mac or else it'll be totally useless to that guy. That's why sometimes, wires are better.... you don't need a specific NIC for it...

Thanks for the help but I ran it by my roommates and they don't want to spend that type of money. I tried telling them it'll be cheaper in the long run. Whatever, I'll still charge them 30 a month instead of the 20 the extra connections will cost through optonline and save myself twenty bucks a month.

I just have one more question, Is it possible to change my screen name in here? I'm not too happy with the one I have now.

You might want to sell them on wires instead of wireless. It may not be as convenient, but it beats paying for the extra connections.

And yeah, IM or email me with the new name.

I haven't read anything about it recently but, I heard something about a phoneline home network a while back. Sounded like a cheaper alternative to wireless. Not sure about speed compared to typical LAN configuration.

Obviously phonelines are smaller gauge than cat 5 cables so I would expect it to be slower. But, then again, if your willing to settle for wireless, maybe speed isn't all that important.

Well, anyway... just another option to consider.
