Anyone know how to get rid of Windows Messenger? It was installed default when I upgraded to Windows XP. Now I'm fucking stuck with this piece of shit I never use. I can't find the option to uninstall it in Control Panel.

FTL... comment?

I try to sleep, they're wide awake, they won't leave me alone.
They don't get paid to take vacations, or let me alone.
They spy on me, I try to hide, they won't let me alone.
They persecute me, they're the judge and jury all in one.

I haven't dealt with XP much really, but I figure it's got no uninstall because stupid MS doesn't WANT you to uninstall it.

You probably can stop it from running, though. Just find it in the Run key - either of these two registry locations (I doubt they've changed the registry so much that these aren't there):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

If you browse there in regedit, you should be able to find the line that runs the Messenger program and delete THAT VALUE ONLY. I wouldn't suggest screwing with other stuff... unless, of course, you know what it is and want it gone.

I've got the Ultra Win-Cleaner Utility suite...
It's got an option for removing those stubborn programs.

Oh...And Fuggin Moron, FN Sluggo says you're a FAEG!

Using Notepad, open %systemroot%\inf\sysoc.inf (normally C:\winnt\inf\sysoc.inf for Windows 2000, or C:\windows\inf\sysoc.inf for XP). This file determines which of the Windows optional components are displayed in the Control Panel "add/remove Windows components" applet. You'll see several lines like this:
Games=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,games.inf,HIDE,7
The first part, to the left of the "=", is an identifier for that component. Some are more cryptic than others; in the above example it's obvious that the optional Windows Games (ie, Freecell, Solitaire, Minesweeper) are being referred to. Another line refers to "AccessUtil", which is the Accessibility Utilities component. Most can be figured out relatively easily. For Microsoft Messenger, the line is "MSMSGS".

The second part determines the behaviour of that component within the add/remove programs applet. The bit we're particularly interested in is the word "HIDE" towards the end of the line. If this flag is present, then the component in question will NOT be exposed to the end user for removal via the Control Panel. If you want to have the option to remove the component, simply remove the word HIDE. So the example line above becomes:
Games=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,games.inf,,7
Be sure NOT to remove the delimiting commas from the line.

Save the file when you've finished editing it. Take a backup copy just in case. Now re-load the Control Panel->"Add/remove Programs"->"Windows Components" applet. The SYSOC.INF file is parsed anew each time this applet is run, so your changes should be reflected immediately. All being well, you should now see the additional components listed and available for removal.

***EDIT***

hornygoatweed you beat me to it, Bah! It was my one and only chance to show up FTL arghhhh!

Anyway, what is this version 4.5 you are talking about?

I think it all started with the Declaration of Independence -- the idea that we had the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That pursuit is what took America from the revolution to the computer age in 200 years. But the progress has come at a price. The obvious being the people that were exploited to make it possible; the not so obvious being us, the first group of people that were given no obvious frontiers to conquer. We hear stories that about the good old days that don't seem to apply anymore. It's a generation gap that leaves us without role models. But the bright side is that without role models, there are no roles. Maybe that's what the 60s were all about -- getting rid of the roles. But what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, the choices become overwhelming. Sometimes it just makes everything feel hopeless. So we destroy our bodies in the search of an ideal. Try to salvage relationships that don't work. We feel we must do something, instead of doing something that we feel. It is the prison of self-imposed momentum, and the sad part is that we get used to it. It reminds me of a song I heard the other day. It's called "The Going Nowhere Fast." But the people I have met here have shown me another side of Nowhere. They've pointed out the beautiful irony that stagnation makes it easy to stop and smell the roses, if we just let it. What would we be if we had nothing to rebel against? Well we could finally be ourselves, the first group of people who stopped looking for the answers long enough to appreciate the questions. And all we have to do is to make our own Declaration of Independence. We can embrace the right to life and liberty by simply realizing that happiness exists -- not to pursue, but to accept. After that the only challenge would be to make sure with the rest of our lives that we weren't just another fad. I don't know, it's an idea. What do you think?

I don't know Slash, apparently there are a few differnet versions out. Once I installed XP I had 4.5 - but I got rid of it nonetheless :)

Hey, when I've gotta wake up at 6:30, staying up till those times means I'm half asleep the next day.

Today would be a good example of that.
