Psychopath Registered: Jul. 00 | I'm trying to network my computer (WinXP) with my girlfriend's (Win98). I followed the Wizard's directions on both machines, in addition to an article in issue 2 of "The Official Magazine Windows XP." The problem is, the '98 machine can't see my XP machine at all, and all my XP can see is her shared Docs folder and printer (which is weird, because the printer is attatched to mine...) The XP machine has a 100BaseT Ethernet card, the '98 has a 10BaseT, and they are run through a 10BaseT Ethernet Hub. Does anyone know what's wrong, and how to fix it? O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | Need more info..... -Are they connected to the internet - if so, how? -If there is a router with DHCP on it (auto-IP-addressing), make sure both computers are set to obtain their IP automatically. -If not, make sure both computers have similar IPs. I would suggest one have 192.168.0.1 and the other 192.168.0.2 - and the subnet mask on both should be 255.255.255.0 -Make sure the Workgroup is the same on both machines. -Open a DOS prompt in Win98 and try to ping the IP of the XP machine. The command is "ping (IP address)". If you need any help on HOW to do any of the things I've mentioned, just ask here, and I (or anyone else who knows) can help you out.

Is that the MSHome thing? quote:Again, I'll do that when I get a chance to do the other stuff. Thanks for the help! You've probably already done this, but make sure the folders you want to share are set as shared on the XP machine Also, you may need to set access rights for the guest account on XP, not sure though as I don't have XP, but it is an issue I've had with 2K..

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | Right, how frickin stupid of me. Okay, the 98 computer has to log in right? Of course. Even if you just have no password and you just click OK, there's still got to be a username there. That username HAS TO BE a user on the XP machine, and the password has to be the same. To do this (and I hope XP is the same as 2000 on this) go into "Computer Management" in the Administrative Tools. Inside this you'll see "Local User and Groups". Under this there's Users. You must add that username here, and make the password the same as the password to log into Win98 (even if it's no password). To find the workgroup in Win98, right-click Network Neighborhood. click Properties, and click the Identification tab. You'll see "Workgroup" there. This should be the same as the workgroup of the XP machine. Also on this properties page, check out the Configuration tab. If the Primary Logon is not set to Client for Microsoft Networks, it should be. That will give you the login box when you start Windows - you probably won't be able to do this without that. Give it a shot...
