Is this enough to solidify their defense?

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Free agent defensive end Trace Armstrong, a 12-year veteran who has spent the last six years with the Miami Dolphins, signed Monday with the Oakland Raiders.

Armstrong, 35, led the AFC and ranked second in the league last season with a career-high 16 1/2 sacks. It was the fifth time that he has reached double digits in sacks.

For his career, Armstrong has 98 1/2 sacks in 183 league games, ranking him sixth among active players.

``I had a great situation in Miami and I loved it there, so there were only a couple of places I was interested in going,'' Armstrong said. ``And Oakland was at the top of that list.''

The Dolphins reportedly wanted to keep their sack leader, but could not agree to terms. Details of the contract with the Raiders were not released.

Raiders coach Jon Gruden, who coached Armstrong in this season's Pro Bowl, called him a ``relentless pass rusher playing at the highest level he's ever played at.''

Likewise, Armstrong was impressed with Gruden and his staff at the league's annual all-star game in Hawaii. He also spoke to Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon, the AFC starter.

``It was nice having somebody -- from a player's standpoint -- having someone tell me what kind of organization it was, and would I fit in there,'' he said.

Armstrong, at 6-foot-4 and 270 pounds, hasn't been a starter since 1997, when he started in all 16 games. He played mostly in passing situations last season, but was a leader for the defense on the field and in the locker room.

In Oakland, he could start at left end.

Gruden said Armstrong's age doesn't bother him. The Raiders have several veterans, including Gannon and cornerback Eric Allen.

``He still has a passion to play and he's in peak physical condition,'' Gruden said

Armstrong, who played at Florida, was the 12th overall pick in 1989 by the Bears. He spent six seasons in Chicago before he was traded to the Dolphins.

The Raiders won the AFC West and defeated the Dolphins in the playoffs before losing to Baltimore in the conference title game.

Armstrong, who said he did not know much about the team until he faced them, was impressed.

``I think they have, I should say we have, an excellent chance to be a Super Bowl contender next year,'' he said.
