NFL BREAK DOWN- WEEK 1 SEPTEMBER 9,10, 2001

Indianapolis Colts (0-0) at New York Jets (0-0)
The two teams that are likely to fight it out for the AFC East Division Title will square off to kick off the season at the Meadowlands. The Jets are a more balanced team than the Colts, but the Colts are one of the most explosive offensive teams in the league. They have arguably the best Quarterback and Running Backs in the Game, in Peyton Manning and Edgerin James. They go along well with Stellar Wide Receiver Marvin Harrison. This should be a great matchup and should go down to the wire. I was originaly thinking of taking the Colts here, but I think Coach Herman Edwards will have his team ready to play here, and with the Home Crowd being a factor, Ill take the Jets defense to limit the Colts, and for the Jets to punch out a big victory here in week 1.
SCORE: Jets 23 Colts 17

Chicago Bears (0-0) at Baltimore Ravens (0-0)
The Superbowl Champs begin defense of the Lombardi Trophy and Week 1 should not be much of a Test for the Champs. The Chicago Bears are not one of the elite teams in the NFL, and dont expect Chicago to put much up on the board this Sunday afternoon. If the Bears were to score double digit points that would be an accomplishment. Baltimore will be pumped. The Fans will be pumped to see the Defending Champs in action. This one should be all Ravens.
SCORE: Ravens 23 Bears 6

Detroit Lions (0-0) at Green Bay Packers (0-0)
The Packers are getting alot of praise this offseason as a team that can make some noise in the NFC Central. Im not a high believer of the Packers. The team will only go as far as Brett Favre takes them, and Favre has proven over the past couple of years that he is not the same Brett Favre from a few years back. Favre is prone for the Interception and has thrown some big ones in recent years that have cost Green Bay some games. Detroit isnt a Powerhouse team either, but are just as good as the Pack. I think Detroit will keep this one close and will pull off a close one at the end in Lambeau.
SCORE: Lions 20 Packers 17

Tampa Bay Bucs (0-0) at Dallas Cowboys (0-0)
It is no secret to anybody that the Dallas Cowboys are just a flat out awful football team. If the team wins a quarter of its games this season, that would probably surprise alot of people. Jerry Jones has finally run this team into the ground and they are suffering for their success from the early to mid 90's. The Bucs are a team destined for a Superbowl run as they have brought in Brad Johnson to replace Shaun King at Quarterback. The Bucs may fall a little short in their Superbowl bid, but they will not fall short this Sunday at Irving, Texas.
SCORE: Bucs 27 Cowboys 10

Oakland Raiders (0-0) at Kansas City Chiefs (0-0)
One of the better rivalries in Football will kick off the season this Sunday from Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Arrowhead is never an easy place to play for a visitor, but it might get a little easier this time around with a floundering Chiefs team. By the end of this season, Dick Vermeil will probably be wishing he either stayed in retirement, or never left St. Louis. The Raiders are another team that poised to make a run at the Superbowl in New Orleans. Only time will tell about that. The Raiders may have some short comings as well. I expect the Chiefs to put up a fight because nobody walks over the Chiefs on their home turf. But the Raiders will be too much for the Chiefs at the end.
SCORE: Raiders 30 Chiefs 21

New Orleans Saints (0-0) at Buffalo Bills (0-0)
The fact that the Bills started off the week as a favorite in this game is mind boggling to me. The Bills may be one of the worst teams in the AFC by the time this year is all said with and done. Over the past couple of years, one things has been constant in Buffalo. When Doug Flutie was Quarterback, they won. When Rob Johnson was Quarterback, they lost. Well Flutie is in San Diego, and Johnson is at the helm as QB of this team. The Saints are a good Football team, that may be a bit overrated and might stumble a bit after last years surprisingly good season. But I expect the Saints to start off this campaign well with a win in Buffalo
SCORE: Saints 31 Bills 14

New England Patriots (0-0) at Cincinnati Bengals (0-0)
This is a very tough game to call. I dont expect much out of the Patriots this year at all, and you never expect anything out of the Bengals. I expect this one to be a close one all the way through, but the Patriots will pull it out in the end.
SCORE: Patriots 17 Bengals 16

Seattle Seahawks (0-0) at Cleveland Browns (0-0)
Both of these teams I expect to improve from last year. Butch Davis is going to implement a winning system in due time in Cleveland and they will be improvement from their previous 2 years in the league. Seattle had a down season last year, after winning the AFC West Title in 1999. Holmgren has made moves to get the right people in place and Seattle should be a team contending for a Playoff spot, and if they are going to do that, they need to take care of games like this, that are very winnable.
SCORE: Seahawks 24 Browns 14

Pittsburgh Steelers (0-0) at Jacksonville Jaguars (0-0)
Expect this game to be a close one between two evenly matched teams. I think the Jaguars may sneak up on some people this year. They have a soft schedule and an underrated Quarterback in Mark Brunell, who is one of the better QB's in the league. The Jaguars might surprise a few people and compete in the AFC Central. The same could go for Pittsburgh, although their Quarterback situation isn't as clear as Jacksonville's is, with Kordell Stewart. Anyway this one should go down to the wire, and the Jags will pull it out at home.
SCORE: Jaguars 23 Steelers 20 (OT)

Carolina Panthers (0-0) at Minnesota Vikings (0-0)
The Panthers are an awful football team and they will be exposed at the Metrodome by the explosive Vikings. Alot of people are looking for the downfall of the Vikings, but no matter what happens to this team. Dennis Green always seems to put a winning product on the Field. Now Dennis Green may be somebody who can never win the Big Game, but he always has quality football teams year in and year out. And I expect the Vikings to once again be a Playoff team. Expect big things this year out of the tandem of Caulpepper and Moss.
SCORE: Vikings 44 Panthers 20

Atlanta Falcons (0-0) at San Francisco 49ers (0-0)
The 49ers may be the slightly better Football team, but I dont trust their defense, and I think Michael Vick will explode in his debut game in the National Football League. This might be one of the more exciting games of the day, and expect big numbers to be put up by both quarterbacks in this game. Vick for the Falcons and Jeff Garcia for the 49ers.
SCORE: Falcons 38 49ers 31

St. Louis Rams (0-0) at Philadelphia Eagles (0-0)
This is one of the marquis games of the week, and it will be test from the get go for the Eagles. Can their defense shut down one of the more explosive offensives ever to play the game. The Eagles are still going to be a good team this year, but they are not on the level of the Rams. The Vet in Philly is nowhere near an intimidating place to play and I feel the Rams will have no problem walking in and taking one from the Eagles.
SCORE: Rams 34 Eagles 21

Washington Redskins (0-0) at San Diego Chargers (0-0)
The Chargers won 1 game all of last year. They will equal that total this week against the Redskins. The Chargers are going to turn some heads this year in the AFC. They were not nearly as bad as their record indicated last year, and with some luck could have won 5 or 6 games. The addition of Doug Flutie is huge as he is a proven winner. The Redskins have gone down hill, and that hill should continue to go south this year as they are nothing better than a mediocre Football Team.
SCORE: Chargers 29 Redskins 17

Miami Dolphins (0-0) at Tennessee Titans (0-0)
This is a tough spot for the Dolphins to start their seaon. On the road against the team that might be the team to beat in the NFL This year. The Titans have only lost two games at home in the past 2 years, including Playoffs. And both those games were last year to the Ravens. The Titans are unstoppable their and the Dolphins certainly are not going to break any of that on Sunday Night.
SCORE: Titans 23 Dolphins 3

New York Giants (0-0) at Denver Broncos (0-0)
This is not an easy spot for the Giants coming off their NFC Championship of a year ago. They have to go to Denver on Monday Night, to open up their New Stadium. The Giants will have to play a Perfect Game to pull this off. They can stay competive in this game, but their is just too much going up against them here, not to mention a very solid and well balanced Football team of the Denver Broncos.
SCORE: Broncos 27 Giants 16

Considering we (Jets) go to Oakland next week where our asses seem to be whipped all the time, this game is ver important for us. Maybe John Abraham will decree a holy whooping early in the game on Peyton Manning and his hobbled leg.

Herm Edwards is the Jets 13th coach in franchise history, will 13 be a lucky number for the starcrossed Jets?

The Jets will either be great this season or suck terribly.

Don't take this ass whipping too bad. The Colts are just a flat out better Football team and their Offense conquered our defense. They were more prepared to play.

The Jets may start off 0-2 and thats not good at all. But remember, last year they started 4-0, and were 9-4 and didn't make the playoffs.

Its more important to be solid in Decemeber, than in September. They have the Patriots and 49ers in Weeks 3 and 4, which should get the Jets right back to .500, even if they lose next week.

Here's my analysis... Quincy Carter is worse than AIDS as Norton would say. 34 yards & 2 interceptions... what a fucking waste of life.

Froy, we are just going to have to suck it up and watch the Boys suck this year. The Aikman debacle left them with no money to sign a waterboy, let alone an NFL caliber QB. One thing is for certain, if Campo keeps running the option, he won't have one at the end of the year.

All in all, there have been some excellent games this weekend, some surprises, some disappointments, and amazingly enough, very few disputes involving officials. The next few weeks will really tell the tale.

Cowboy fans fret not. Supposed to have $18 million of cap room freed up for next year. Maybe then they can sign talented players, not just scrubs to fill roster spots.

If quincy carter had the accuracy of a pop warner player, the cowboys wouldve won today.

Anyone realize that the Giants are in first place and they dont even play till tomorrow :) NFC East sucks lol.

It could be worse. You could be a Washington Foreskins fan or have picked Jeff George for your fantasy team. Two interceptions one fumble, and a loss to a team that is a year removed from 1-15. I can't wait until Snyder blows his lid again.

It could be worse. You could be a Jets fan, like me.

It's a catch-22. The Giants will once again be the strongest team in a weak division, thus then will have to prove themselves in the playoffs and if they don't, the whole "no respect" issue might pop up again. Fans shouldn't care, nor should it matter if they play, and WIN Super Bowl XXXVI.

Officials: I saw every minute of the Jets game and could find no major blown call by the officials. And WNYW broadcast the Eagles/Rams game, and that was a tough call to make by those 'rookie' officials but it appeared to be the right one.

If you want to get technical, THe Giants are actually tied with Arizona for the Division lead at 0-0.
