| This looks like its gonna be the most emotional regular season game I can ever remember. Not just the first baseball game in NY since the tragedy but a big game for the Mets slim playoff chances. Here are some highlights:
GET READY: It's going to be an emotional, memorable night at Shea Stadium as baseball returns to New York for the first time since the destruction of the World Trade Center last Tuesday. In pregame ceremonies, Diana Ross is scheduled to perform "God Bless America", Marc Anthony (who last performed at Shea before Game Five of the 2000 World Series) will perform "The Star-Spangled Banner", a moment of silence will be observed and the Marine Color Guard will recognize rescue workers with a 21-gun salute. The New York Police Department Pipers will play "Amazing Grace" and representatives of the rescuers will accompany the Mets on the field for the ceremonial first pitch. Liza Minelli is to sing "New York, New York" from the top of the visiting dugout during the seventh-inning stretch.
PLAYING FOR FREE: The Mets' coaches, players and front office personnel are all donating tonight's pay to the New York Police and Fire Widows' and Childrens' Fund, a gesture that is expected to raise over $450,000.
QUIET AIR: The Federal Aviation Administration has granted the Mets' request to bar airspace over Shea Stadium from small commercial airliners through Sunday, and the Mets have not ruled out pursuing an extension after that. "We understand that [low-flying planes] may be something that some people might find unnerving," Mets vice president David Howard said. "We're doing everything we can to make people feel safe and comfortable."
SHEA GOODBYE?: The Mets are strongly considering altering the replicated New York City skyline above the right-field scoreboard to remove the image of the World Trade Center.
IN THE OTHER DUGOUT: The Atlanta Braves are extremely aware of the fact that they're going up against a sizzling New York Mets team this weekend that has all of the momentum. "If you had told me a month ago that they would be back in it, I would have said you were crazy," Atlanta reliever Steve Karsay admitted. "But it's reality. They are playing as good as anyone in the country right now. We know they have emotion on their side. We are playing with emotion, too, but they are playing with much more. They're playing for New York City and playing for the firefighters and the police and the families of the victims and everyone. And they have all the momentum."
ON FIRE: The Mets are the hottest team in baseball, having won nine of their last 10 and 20 of their last 25 to go one game above .500 at 74-73. They trail the Braves by 5 1/2 games coming into this weekend series

| Man i wish i was there. This was a game tonight that i will never forget. One of those games where u always remember where u were when u saw it. The whole night was incredible, from the 21 gun salutes, to the Rudy Guiliani cheering, to the rescue workers being there, and then the Piazza home run. Just that moment, that situation, for Piazza to come through and hit the biggest home run in his life was surreal. Watching the crowd react and the rescue workers smiling, it was so emotional.
I dont think ive ever shed tears over a homerun, until tonight anyway, it was so unreal. Even if only for a few hours, at least people got to have different emotions tonight, like cheering and crying, but in tears of joy. Theres so much more i wanna say about it but i dont know if i could do justice to the whole night with only words.

| Definitely a game to remember
you had the pre game emotion, the fact that 41,000 showed up despite security concerns (only a handful of paying people showed in other parks), and the drama of falling behind in 8th, close pitch to Alfonzo leads to walk, and Mike BLASTS one.
too bad its still almost impossible.........

Its still a long shot, but that shot get shorter and shorter every day.
The Mets going 21-5 in their last 26 games, that would have been termed a Super Long Shot and they have done it. And just look at tonight's game every little break went against the Mets tonight and they still win the game.
- Chipper Jones scores from First on a ball that barely get past First Base, they have him out by 20 Feet at the Plate and Piazza drops the ball right in his glove on a perfect throw.
- The Mets have 2 outs and Ventura on First, Zeile hits a Double down the line into the corner, and Ventura cant score from First.
- Payton hits a ball down the line and Caminiti makes an amazing off balanced throw to get Payton, probably the fastest guy on the Mets.
- Todd Zeile hits a linedrive off Jason Marquis' back, it goes right to Rey Sanchez for a double play.
- You pray that Chipper Jones doesnt kill you with a big hit, and you get him to hit a cheap ball over the pitcher and he still gets on with an Infield hit.
- John Franco starts off the 8th with 2 outs and nobody on, and he does the unthinkable. He walks Julio Franco, who I remember seeing him play baseball back in the mid 80's. He walks him in front of Chipper Jones, leading to a run in the Inning.
- On two occasions, The Mets needed a big out and 2 Braves hit foul balls that landed 2 rows back out of reach of Zeile and Ventura respectively.
All this stuff went wrong for the Mets tonight, and they still win the game. Im going to tell you something, The Braves are not a Very Good Team at all! Their lineup is just as bad as the Mets have been for the First 4 1/2 months.
After Chipper Jones, nobody scares you. Andruw Jones isnt half the player he was the past couple of years, Brian Jordan has fallen off the map as a big time run producer. And the Braves are loaded with guys who dont scare anybody, like Rey Sanchez, Wes Helms, Marcus Giles, etc.
And the Phillies arent that good either. And remember the Mets last 6 games of the year are at home against the 2 worst teams in the National League, the Pirates and Expos. This is getting more realistic every day.
Hopefully the Mets can beat Maddux tomorrow night and Trachsel will return to be what he has been the 2nd half of the season. If the Mets pitching holds up in these 6 games against Atlanta, they can do it, because right now the Mets are actually a better hitting team than the Braves. And for the most part of the season, the Mets werent a better hitting team than anybody.

My thoughts exactly, Lent. I'm so glad I was there to be a part of that.
When the pre-game ceremony started, it took all of about 30 seconds for me to get choked up, and as much as I can't stand Liza Minnelli, she really got the crowd pumped when she sang "New York, New York" during the 7th inning stretch.
As for Piazza's 2-run homer in the bottom of the 8th, that had to be the first time that a home run almost brought tears to my eyes. What an amazing night at Shea.

| As a Yankke fan and most of all a transplanted New Yorker from Jersey, I was happy for the Mets last night and I want a rematch of the Subway Series. What could be better to get NY's spirits up again. I watched the beginning and the end of the Mets game and will admit this was the first time in my life I was happy the Mets won.
Than let firemen, policemen, and ems workers or even family members that died throw out the first ball

| Look up the word "Heartbreaker" in the dictionary and they will have a big caption of today's game.
I was at the Terry Pendleton Homerun game in 1987 against the Cardinals, and this one tops that.
I was going to go into a rant, but its too painful, I dont even want to talk about it now.
