October 2, 2001
The Eagles announced Tuesday that they have signed running back Rod Smart to the team’s practice squad. As is club policy, financial terms of the deal were undisclosed.
The 5-feet-11, 191-pound Smart becomes the Eagles second member of the roster that spent the spring of 2001 playing in the now-defunct XFL.
As a member of the Las Vegas Outlaws, Smart ranked second in the league in rushing behind John Avery with 146 carries for 555 yards and three touchdowns. He also led the Outlaws in receiving with 27 receptions for 245 yards.
Prior to his term in Las Vegas, Smart was signed as a rookie free agent by the San Diego Chargers on May 19, 2000, before being released weeks later on June 9. Smart also spent August of 2001 with the Edmonton Eskimos of the CFL.
The 24-year old Smart played collegiately at Western Kentucky under head coach Jack Harbaugh, the father of Eagles special teams coach John Harbaugh.
As a senior at WKU, Smart rushed for 1,249 yards on 188 carries and posted six 100-yard outings in 11 games. Smart is also a first cousin of Eagles rookie wide receiver Freddie Mitchell. Both he and Mitchell are natives of Lakeland, FL.
To make room on the practice squad, the team released running back Anthony Gray.

| Good pick by the Eagles. He isn't amazing, but he's good so he should do a good job of preparing their defense. He is not ready to be an NFL starter. He could be an above-average player in the CFL.
