Psychopath Registered: May. 00 | http://msn.espn.go.com/rpm/cart/2001/1028/1270156.html Sunday, October 28 Brazilians shine in Australia ESPN.com news services SURFERS PARADISE, Australia -- Cristiano da Matta claimed his second victory and fellow Brazilian Gil de Ferran captured his second straight CART championship Sunday at the Honda Indy 300. Da Matta won his third career race with a record-time at this 2.795-mile circuit, averaging 97.511 mph in his Toyota/Lola in a time of one hour, 51 minutes and 47.260 seconds. His first win of the year came in the season-opener at Monterrey, Mexico in March. "Our team needed this win and the momentum it brings as we head to the finale next weekend (at the California Speedway)," said Da Matta, who moved into fifth place in the CART standings. "Anytime you win a race it is a very good feeling. To win in Australia is good because we came here so early, and you get to make friends and go out to dinner and those sorts of things. I've been here since Friday and you just start to enjoy it so much." Da Matta led the last 14 laps after gaining the lead from pole-sitter Roberto Moreno on the 52nd of the race's 65 laps. He finished 5.786 seconds ahead of Michael Andretti's Honda/Reynard. "I couldn't quite follow the pace Gil and Moreno brought in the beginning of the race and I had to drive for mileage," Da Matta said. "I stopped on the same lap as Moreno (on the first round of pit stops), but he was able to go faster and get the same mileage. But then I was able to pass Moreno before the second stop." Da Matta's victory was the fifth of the season for Toyota and the ninth for Lola. De Ferran took fourth place to clinch his second consecutive Championship Series title and earn the Vanderbilt Cup. With an insurmountable 191-163 lead over Sweden's Kenny Brack in the championship standings, he joined Rick Mears (1981-82), Bobby Rahal (1986-1987), and Alex Zanardi (1997-98) as back-to-back winners. "I guess it hasn't completely sunk in yet," De Ferran said. "all I can think is I'm a very fortunate person to be driving for a guy like Roger (Penske) and a team like we have. All I can think is how much I like these guys. To me, I've been living in a dream since I joined the team two years ago. Since I joined the team, my life has been wonderful from a personal and from a professional standpoint. I've been able to drive better and keep reaching new heights. Never in a million years did I ever think I would achieve this much success. For me to be speaking here as a two-time champion is very special." This is the ninth CART championship for Team Penske and sixth straight for Honda. Andretti notched his fifth podium appearance of the season and his first since coming in third at Vancouver last month. He moved into a third-place tie in the points standings with Helio Castoneves of Brazil with 141 points each. "It was a pretty good day," Andretti said. "I was starting to run Cristiano down, but then they came on the radio and told me that I had to start saving fuel. I was a little disappointed, but I'm pretty happy to do it here for (Team Motorola owners, Australians) Barry and Kim Green. I also much congratulate Gil. He did a great job all year." Alex Tagliani of Canada finished in third place in his Ford-Costworth/Reynard. He stood on the podium for the second time this season and first since a career-best second-place effort at Toronto in July. "I'm pretty please," Tagliani said. "The Player's team has been really strong. We've qualified in the top five in many street and road course races. At the start of this race we did a lot of battling with Michael. Toward the end, I was being help up by Gil and Paul (Tracy), but then (Player's/Forsythe Racing Vice President of Operations) Niel Micklewright came on the radio and said, `You need to pass Gil.' I didn't want to (mess) up his championship, but I passed him clean at the end of the back straightway. I was starting to catch Michael but I ran out of time." Brack took fourth place, followed by Jimmy Vasser, Michel Jourdain Jr. of Mexico, Christian Fittipaldi of Brazil and Max Papis of Italy. Scott Dixon of New Zealand was 15th which was enough to clinch the CART Rookie of the Year title. He has 42 points more than Brazilian Bruno Junqueira. Im glad i did, because i got to see that jackass get reamed for posting shit like this. What a tool, stick to Rangers and Anna Kournikova threads. Oh, and why even make 1 universal CART thread?? The only one talking in there will be him. Objective 2: Root for Braves to exit from playoffs- COMPLETE Objective 3: Root for the Diamondbacks to win the World Series | ||||
