Psychopath Registered: Sep. 01 | Seriously, this guy is too modest for his own good. He could have signed at the start of this season and wouldn't have even had to play a game while cashing in on $30 million. And to top it off he announces it during an NFL weekend to try and lessen the amount of attention he gets. His record only lasted three years, but he shattered a 37-year-old record and is 5th all-time on HR leaders list, so we will be overexposed to his career highlihts tomorrow, most likely. O&A Board Veteran Registered: Feb. 01 | This is a true loss for baseball and the fans. And I have to wonder if this is at all influenced by the impending labor problems. I believe in the Faith... that can save me. I believe in the hope and I pray... That someday it may raise me... above these badlands

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | quote: Yes it is a huge loss to the game, but I dont think it had to do with the labor problems, although it couldve been. After reading his statements, I truly believe that he did it so that the Cardinals could get Jason Giambi, who is his good friend by the way. And honestly, I think the Cards will get him because of McGwire. Fan of the Giants and the Rangers. Hater of the rest of the NFC East and the Devils.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Aug. 01 | He was a great player. I liked him better when he was with Oakland, I haven't liked him since he got the batting title in '98 because he made the record using steroids, and an athlete shouldn't be able to take them in my opinion. But he will be missed, great career for him.

Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 70 | He missed two full seasons in the middle of his prime due to injury. The numbers he missed out on are just like what Ted Williams missed out on when he was in WWII. Were it not for those two seasons missed, McGwire could be sitting at 680+ homers instead of 580+ and would have had a realistic shot at breaking Aaron's record. To think, he was seriously considering retiring in '94 when he had that foot problem. What did he hit, another 400 HOMERS in that time? Best sports writer ever
