O&A Board Veteran Registered: Feb. 01 | SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Doug Flutie has agreed to a six-year contract with the San Diego Chargers and will take over the starting quarterback job vacated when Ryan Leaf was cut. Flutie was scheduled to sign his contract Friday morning and then hold a news conference, team spokesman Bill Johnston said. Financial terms weren't immediately available. Flutie will be reunited with general manager John Butler, who as GM of the Buffalo Bills brought the 5-foot-10 quarterback back into the NFL in 1998, signing him as a free agent from the CFL. Butler was hired as Chargers GM on Jan. 5 and has quickly started to reshape a team that was an NFL-worst 1-15 in 2000. His biggest coup was signing unrestricted free agent defensive end Marcellus Wiley from the Bills to a $40 million, six-year contract, the biggest in team history. Top Chargers officials weren't available for comment. But after Flutie visited the team on Tuesday, coach Mike Riley said he envisioned Flutie as the quarterback, perhaps grooming Michael Vick, the likely top pick in April's draft. The Chargers haven't said they'll pick Vick, but are known to be excited that they've got the chance to get him. Flutie was 21-9 in three seasons with the Bills but didn't survive Buffalo's long-running QB controversy. He was released last week after the Bills decided to go with Rob Johnson. Leaf, meanwhile, was 4-14 as a starter in his turbulent three years with San Diego, throwing 33 interceptions and losing nine fumbles while throwing just 13 touchdown passes. He was waived last week and claimed by Tampa Bay. On the same day they released Leaf, the Chargers signed Dave Dickenson from Calgary of the CFL, one of Flutie's old teams. The Chargers hope Flutie can add some stability to a position that's been a disaster the last 3 1/2 seasons. Since Stan Humphries suffered what turned out to be a career-ending concussion in the ninth game of 1997, six Chargers QBs have combined to throw 99 interceptions and just 47 touchdowns. Even before signing Flutie, Butler had spent $71.6 million on defensive free agents Wiley and cornerbacks Ryan McNeil and Alex Molden. ~Matt/Froy from Jersey The Hell Hole Official Protector of Gay Marco & SwampJunk...if he ever decides to post. O&A Board Veteran Registered: Feb. 01 | I don't know, hopefully since he won't be able to play for Norv Turner he'll just retire. I'd expect him to go to Miami before he went to Pittsburgh, but it depends on the cap situation. ~Matt/Froy from Jersey The Hell Hole Official Protector of Gay Marco & SwampJunk...if he ever decides to post. Psychopath Registered: Dec. 00 | I don't get the move by the Chargers or Flutie. Why would Doug want to go to such a crappy team? And why would the Chargers want to sign him for that long? --------------------------

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | quote: If you think about it, it makes sense if they draft Vick. Flutie and Vick are mobile QBs that can/will take off at the sign of danger and getting the team use to this is a big issue. It forces the receivers to keep track of the QB longer (and break off patterns if they need to) and make the O-line finish their blocks since the QB will hold the ball til the last possible second. The new GM at SD was formerly from Buffalo. The length is more for salary cap reasons. Sig Pic Under Construction

O&A Board Veteran Registered: Feb. 01 | They should still draft Vick, Flutie is getting old, but they need more than a quarterback. A few good linemen, and a runningback would help. And it's ok Mashed, you can keep your pinkie....this time.... ~Matt/Froy from Jersey The Hell Hole Official Protector of Gay Marco & SwampJunk...if he ever decides to post. Psychopath Registered: Aug. 00 | The Chargers have a very good defense, but in the AFC west you need to score points. They are going to DRAFT VICK unless they are wise enough to TRADE down to someone that has 2...YES TWO..first round picks. A QB is an ABSOLUTE MUST for the BOLTS since FLUTIE is old and injury prone but he has that uncanny knack for finding ways to win. If the Chargers can get a mid first round QB and a good reciever or running back it will go a long way to help them become more GOODER!!! EASY ON THE QUIL MPH!!! :) PICKING OFF ASS F`s 1 BY 1!!!

Psychopath Registered: Nov. 00 | Not to be a deek, but I completely called this move by the Chargers. Flutie may be old, but he has never had a major injury and remains more mobile the 85% of the league's QB's. Age really means nothing if you can ward off injuries your entire career. Still, I don't see Flutie going all 6 years. Visit this Website New York Dragons Arena Football!!! See their home-opener April 21st against the Toronto Phantoms at the Nassau Coliseum
