Wednesday, December 5 Lewis does not want Tyson to fight anyone else -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Associated Press NEW YORK -- Lennox Lewis is suing Mike Tyson to prevent him from fighting on Jan. 19 or to have the WBC remove Tyson from the mandatory challenger's position if he does fight. The suit, which also names the WBC as a defendant, was filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan on Tuesday. It contends that such a fight for Tyson could hurt Lewis financially. Tyson and Lewis are expected to fight next spring. Lewis regained the WBC-IBF heavyweight titles by knocking out Hasim Rahman on Nov. 17. Tyson is scheduled to fight Mercer next month, probably at Atlantic City, N.J. He then is supposed to challenge Lewis in April, although that fight is not yet signed. In a statement, Tyson said Wednesday that he was "outraged by Lennox's attempt to interfere with my career." "I stepped aside as the WBC challenger in November to allow the rematch with Rahman," Tyson said. "Lennox makes his own rules only when they suit him." The WBC mandatory defense was scheduled for November. A federal judge, however, ruled that Rahman, who knocked out Lewis on April 22, must fight Lewis again before he fought anyone else. The suit contends that the WBC entered into an agreement with Tyson that allows Tyson to engage in a Jan. 19 bout against an opponent other that Lewis, but bars Lewis from fighting anybody before he fights Tyson. It also is said that the Jan. 19 fight could hurt Lewis monetarily. "If Tyson fights on Jan. 19 and is permitted to remain the mandatory challenger, it will be impossible successfully to promote a timely championship bout that will maximize revenues -- especially if Tyson is injured in the Jan. 19 bout," the suit states. "Lennox, if you want me, we can fight on Jan. 19," Tyson said in the statement. "I'm sure Ray Mercer would much rather fight me for the heavyweight crown after I finished you off." A Lewis-Tyson fight should be worth at least $20 million to each fighter unless the fight went to purse bids. The suit charges that the WBC has ruled that "in event of the purse bid, the split will be just 44 percent to Lewis and 45 percent to Tyson." Generally, the rule in a purse bid is 75 percent to the champion and 25 percent to the challenger. A mandatory defense against anyone but Tyson would bring Lewis much less than $20 million.  | ||||

He is suing tyson now, after tyson who has every right to take the mercer fight, but lewis didn't wanna fight him last year when tyson offered. Tyson admitted he is not ready for lewis, he needs 1 more fight to get into the mindset he needs for a huge gala event such as this. The guy fought twice in 2000 and once in 2001. He admitted not to be in shape and that is the way lewis wants him especially after the high of ruining hasim rahman. Either way there is no way whatsoever they can fight in January, the earliest would be april or may. But lewis wants to keep tyson out of the ring before then to let the rust grow, that is the only reason. If tyson is allowed to proceed on his terms to get into shape I pick tyson by KO in 10. | Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 70 | tyson has pulled out of the mercer fight and I hope lewis realizes what he has done. He thought and counted on Tyson pulling a Rahman and dragging this out in court till april of 2002. He didn't think tyson would call his bluff and just pull out of the fight. Tyson has said Mercer would probably rather fight tyson a bit later on when he is world champion again. Tyson said it is on and that he will expose cinderlla (Lewis) and break his glass jaw. So finally after 3 years it looks like it may happen. Big fight like this with the hype at its zenith now, they will pull off this fight I would say by late april. Cause if not in april they will have to wait till july and summer buys are not as high so they would want this fight for either april for the large buys or they would have to wait till sept or november to get those same buys and they are not waiting that long. Does anyone else remember when Tyson fought Holyfield the first time? Lewis will destroy him easily. | ||||

Anyway, my pick is Tyson in 8 by KO, and then Witali beating Tyson...setting up Witali vs Wladimir in an epic battle. Fan of the Giants and the Rangers. Hater of the rest of the NFC East and the Devils. | ||||

| Hanger-On Registered: Nov. 01 | Should be a great fight. The anticipation for this fight has been there since 1999. I believe there is talk of an immediate rematch regardless of the winner, so we should be getting two fights between these two. Hopefully this fight will spark some much needed interest in the rest of boxing, where there are some great fighters and great fights taking place in weight classes south of the heavyweights. | ||||
