O&A Board Veteran Registered: May. 00 | Its been a busy day today in off season moves today. In addition to the mets-yankees trade there were a couple of major moves in the MLB. Jason Isringhausen has reportedly signed a 4 year, $27 million with the St. Louis Cardinals to become their closer. This is a major step up for the Cardinals in the closer position which was a by-committee slot for most of the year last year. They should be a more improved team with him. Will this effect the Giambi signing? He was a teammate of izzy in oakland, will izzy put in a good word about st. louis with Giambi and somehow convince him to join him? Stay Tuned. In order to replace Isringhausen, the A's traded for Billy Koch. They gave 2 minor leaguers to the Blue Jays for their closer who saved 36 last year. So it would seem that the A's arent just going to throw in the towel an dump salary, but still try to win games with the team they have. In 2 surprising moves, the Indians offered salary arbitration to Juan Gonzalez and the Yankees offered arbitration to Tino Martinez. Players have until Dec. 19th to accept or reject the offer of arbitration. Very interesting day indeed and with the Winter Meetings on Sunday, the fun is just beginning I don't have a heart of gold and I don't grow one later, OK? But relax. There's other people a lot nicer coming up -- we call them losers.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Aug. 01 | Yeah, I heard Eric Gagne was going to be in the deal somewhere. The Yankees have improved so far in my view and so have the Mets. I just hope the Mets will be in it next year. They were out of it 1/4 into the season and I had to cheer for Cleveland.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | ummmm, you should have gone back to watching the Mets, because they were right there the last couple of weeks of the season, and if a certain somebody could hold on to a 3 and 4 run lead respectively, they may have pulled it out. But I dont want to think about that again.

Psychopath Registered: Mar. 01 | quote: Actually, not that surprising. Both players will almost certainly reject the offers in order to look for more money and better situations elsewhere. However, by offering, the Yanks and Indians will each gain an extra draft pick next year if/when Tino and JuanGone sign contracts elsewhere. Happens a lot with free agents. O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | Here you go skitch. BOSTON (AP) -- All-Star second baseman Roberto Alomar was traded from the Cleveland Indians to the New York Mets on Tuesday as part of an eight-player deal. New York sent Cleveland outfielder Matt Lawton, outfield prospect Alex Escobar, pitcher Jerrod Riggan and two players to be named in exchange for Alomar and two players to be named, a baseball official familiar with the trade said on the condition he not be identified. The trade, the first big deal of the winter meetings, was first reported by Newsday on its Web site Tuesday morning. The deal between Mets general manager Steve Phillips and new Cleveland GM Mark Shapiro was completed between midnight and 12:30 a.m., another baseball official said, also on the condition of anonymity. The Mets and Indians called a news conference for 11 a.m. EST but did not announce the subject. It was the second major move in four days for the Mets, who dealt third baseman Robin Ventura to the Yankees last Friday for outfielder David Justice. It means New York most likely will move Edgardo Alfonso from second base to third next season. After winning the NL pennant in 2000, the Mets failed to make the playoffs this year, finishing with the fewest runs and lowest batting average in the major leagues and the second-fewest homers in the NL. Alomar, 33, is a 12-time All-Star who hit a team-high .336 this year with 20 homers, 100 RBIs and 30 steals.

Florida gave left-hander Jesus Sanchez to the Chicago Cubs for minor league left-hander Nate Teut, the first trade by the Marlins since Aug. 6, before owner John Henry began talks to sell his team.

On top of Rocker trades, a bunch of Yankees (bold) signed new deals today, including a true Yankee (24). Arizona Diamondbacks -- Agreed to terms with outfielder Danny Bautista on a three-year contract. Colorado Rockies -- Acquired second baseman Pokey Reese and pitcher Dennys Reyes from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for pitchers Luke Hudson and Gabe White. Kansas City Royals -- Signed free agent outfielder Chuck Knoblauch, who had been with the New York Yankees, to a one-year contract. New York Yankees -- Re-signed free agent pitcher Sterling Hitchcock to a two-year contract. St. Louis Cardinals -- Signed free agent first baseman Tino Martinez, who had been with the New York Yankees, to a three-year contract. I'm really going to miss Tino. Hopefully he flourishes in St. Louis. But hopefully Giambi will do even better. GodBlessAmerica. New York State Twatto -- "Hey, you never know." O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | The Boston Red Sox have traded catcher Scott Hatteberg to the Colorado Rockies for second baseman Pokey Reese. Traded twice this off-season. And to think this is the guy that Reds wouldn't trade in Griffey deal. I never understood fascination with him; he is only moderately better than Rey Ordonez. (Reese - .284 OBP, .343 SLG; Ordonez .299 OBP, .336 SLG)

Psychopath Registered: Sep. 01 | Red Sox sign RHP John Burkett, 1B Clark BOSTON (Ticker) -- The Boston Red Sox added another veteran pitcher to their rotation on Wednesday night, signing free agent righthander John Burkett to a two-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed. The Boston Globe reported Thursday that Burkett will receive $11 million over the two years. Boston also agreed to terms on a one-year contract with first baseman Tony Clark, who was eligible for arbitration. ESPN is reporting that Clark will receive $5 million. Sox are making nice moves. Maybe they won't burn up in flames this year and hold out until September before choking like they always do. edit1-- Wells Set to Sign With Diamondbacks PHOENIX (AP) - The World Series champion Arizona Diamondbacks are on the brink of adding David Wells to their already potent rotation. Wells needs to pass a physical exam, and other minor details need to be worked out. The 38-year-old left-hander's agent said Thursday the deal is 85 percent complete, and that Wells expects to sign a one-year deal loaded with incentives shortly after the new year. Wells was 5-7 with a 4.47 ERA in 16 starts for the Chicago White Sox this year. His season was cut short because of back surgery. GodBlessAmerica. New York State Twatto -- "Hey, you never know." Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 70 | quote: No, they're not. They're making horrible moves. Tony Clark. An injury prone, unathletic, bulky, slow overpaid firstbaseman. Sorry, but we already have a couple of them (Daubach, Offerman Dustin Hermanson. Yet another 3-4 Starter (again we've got a ton of them already in Wakefield, Lowe, Castillo, Fossum, Juan Pena, Paxton Crawford, Arrojo) who's been traded away like 5 times in 5 seasons. By the way, we gave up 3 guys between the ages of 19 and 21 including last years #1 pick Darren Oliver. Literally, the worst player on any major league roster. 6.02 ERA. Granted, Everett was a cancer, but why trade him for a guy who would be on the waiver wire in 3 months anyway? If they wanted to get rid of Everett so bad, why not wait until some other team suffers an outfield injury in spring trainging and unload him them. Or worst case scenario, just cut him. Someone else would pick him up. Why take on Oliver's salary? Pokey Reese. Great defensively, but his defense at 2B isn't worth is atrocius offense. And he's not going to supplant Nomar at 3B. Hatteburg is a legit .300 hitter with 15-20 homer potential. Pokey's only upside is his speed and defense. defense at 2B is overrated in general, and the Red Sox don't steal ever. They could have gotten more for Hatteburg. Especially if they packaged him in a deal with someone else, say.....Everett Burkett. Decent. Yet another 3-4 starter. He had a good year last year, but the last thing the Sox need is another starter that's going to pick 5 pretty good innings. They had the most overworked bullpen last year. After Pedro and Nomo, no one else could get passed the 7th inning. Nomo's gone, and Pedro's offically Jumped the Shark and will never win another Cy Young due to injuries. Plus he's 40 and you don't guarantee $10 million to a 40-year old who's best season in 5 years was last years. Damon actually would be a good move. Very cheap compared to what he would have cost last year (4 years for less than $8 mil a year. But he also won't steal, and doesn't walk, so he'll be an average leadoff hitter in Boston Plus the new owners suck ass for a bunch of other reasons.
