Things are starting to come together!

BOSTON (Ticker) -- The New York Mets, looking to jump start one of the worst offenses in baseball, pulled off the biggest deal of the winter meetings thus far, acquiring All-Star second baseman Roberto Alomar from the Cleveland Indians in an eight-player deal.

The Mets will receive Alomar, first baseman Danny Peoples and Class AAA lefthander Mike Bacsik in exchange for outfielders Matt Lawton and Alex Escobar, righthanded pitcher Jerrod Riggan and two players to be named.

A news conference has been scheduled for 11 a.m. EST.

In Alomar, the Mets receive one of the best all-around players in the game. The 33-year-old second baseman is coming a season in which he batted .336 with 20 homers, 100 RBI, scored 100 runs, stole 30 bases and finished fourth in the Most Valuable Player voting.

Cleveland accomplished two tasks with the trade. The Indians slashed payroll with the move and in one deal retooled an outfield that is almost certain to be without 2001 starters Kenny Lofton, Juan Gonzalez and Marty Cordova.

Lawton was an All-Star just two seasons ago with Minnesota and fills Cleveland's need for a leadoff hitter. He was a bit of disappointment with New York, which acquired him at the trade deadline from the Minnesota Twins.

In Escobar, the Indians get New York's best position prospect, a 23-year-old multi-dimensional hitter that struggled at the major league level in 2001.

Fonzi to third.

Nice move. Guess they'll go after Cedeno now to play centerfield.

I hope so. Cedeno was a great fit for the Mets the first time around. They could use a bit of youth & speed.

Adding Cedeno and Alomar would give them a nice lead off an d 2 hitter in fron of Piazza and Fonzi. Though I despise the Mets it's a move I wish the Yanks would have made. Good job by Phillips.

On the flip side, what the hell are the Indians doing? They have no pitching, no bull pen, and now that have almost no offense. Thome is good, but he ain't going to put the numbers up that he used to. This is a division that is the weakest in baseball, the AL Central, And it's going to be even worse. Maybe it's time to reload but, wow.

The Indians outfield last year:Cordova, Lofton, & J. Gonzolaz. this year: Brady Anderson, Matt Lawton, and ???

As a die hard Mets fan, i really like this deal, but we need one more deal at least. I read in the paper sunday that Fonzie wasnt too keen on playing third base on the last year of his contract. The only way hed be comfortable is if he got offered a new deal. He'll move there now. We still need an OF, cause we traded away our best one. Right now our OF is Justice, Payton, and Shinjo, with McEwing as a backup. Not satisfactory at all. I'll begin to celebrate if we can get a Cedeno or someone else in the OF.

Yes, we finally have a respectable bat in the lineup!

Yeah he had the "spitting problem" in Baltimore, but now I think he's cleaned up his act. (Just bringing that back up)

Anyway, I will not pay for mets tickets next year (if there isn't a strike) until they get rid of that fat fuck Benitez!!!!!!!!!!111 .

I don't need to go over how many big games he's blown over the years. Trade the fat fuck at all costs!!!!!

I would not expect them to move Fonzie. He's cheap, a solid player, and stable both on & off the field. If they make a trade, they'll be moving a pitcher, most likely Rusch.

Roberto Alomar is slime. I'm glad he went to the Mets, it will just give me one more reason to hate them. :)

Roberto Alomar was slime.
I assume you are referring to the spitting incident. today on WFAN he was interviewed and said that he was truly sorry for that, has become friends with Hirshbeck, and now helps raise money for the disease that Hirshbeck's son died from. He screwed up, but unlike most people, learned from it to be a better person.

On to the Baseball aspect.
First of all, great pickup. Anytime you can pick up a future hall of famer who last year was a gold glove and silver slugger winner, you do it gladly. Having said that, the Mets did give up a lot of talent, although unproven. Escobar I still think will be an excellent player. He is 23 and only needs more plate discipline. Riggan will be a top set-up guy; he has 90mph fastball/splitter combo, and guts. Billy Traber was 2000 left handed first round pitcher who went from A to AAA last year. I think in a few years this will look kinda like the Piazza & Leiter trades. Mets did give up Preston Wilson and AJ Burnett, but they are quite happy with what they got.

I really hope they get Cedeno, but he is a wild card. He's 27 and fast, but only has a .355 OBP, and last year it was only .337 (He doesn't walk enough for a leadoff hitter); however he had his best year for Mets, really wants to return, and FWIW Rickey Henderson this past year said that he thinks Cedeno will have a breakout 2002.

I would be upset if Alfonzo is traded. (which I don't think will happen). He is coming off of a bad year, but he is only 28, and one of the smartest players on the Mets. He always knows when to hit behind runner, where to make the defensive play, When to take a pitch, etc.

What a coincidence; My ticket package renewal came on the same day they acquire an all-star :)

Right, that's why they're stockpiling young talent so they'll be better in the future. The Indians know that they're not going to contend for a World Series, so they're trying to get something for these guys while they still can.

Alomar is slime?? Because of one spitting incident? I have followed his career since Toronto, where he was the catalyst for two back to back World Championship teams, and he has been nothing but a model citizen before and after that spitting incident. It amazes me that one incident can brand someone for life. Half of the damn NFL has a criminal record, yet Alomar is considered slime?

As Norton would say....NICE! I don't think everyone knows how good this guy is. He does it all. Hits for avg., hits h.r., speed, denfense......all around kick ass player. Fuck getting a lead off hitter, it would be nice, but I think they would do better getting someone to bat fifth and protect Mike. With Fonzie and Alomar getting on in front of him, he could get 150 R.B.I.. Let's go Met's!!!! Now if we could just get Opie to root for the Yankees...........

I shucked it, and I shucked it, and I shucked it, i'm quite the mother shucker!
