| NFL BREAKDOWN- WEEK 17- JANUARY 6,7, 2002
Green Bay Packers (11-4) at New York Giants (7-8)
Last year the Giants were heading to an NFC Championship, this year they will end off a dissapointing year with a pride game against the Packers. This game is very important for Green Bay as it will secure a Home Game in the Playoffs, and quite possibly a Division Title if the Bears are to lose to the Jaguars. Now alot is being questioned as to how the Giants will come out to play this game, knowing that their season is over. I think the Giants will give it their all and not just lay down for Green Bay. With that said, they arent going to beat Green Bay. Even if this game meant something to the Giants, there chances of beating Green Bay would not be great. The Packers are a very good football team, and face it, the Giants are not. Don't expect the Giants to quit out there, but also dont expect to see them walk out with a victory.
SCORE: Packers 24 Giants 12
New York Jets (9-6) at Oakland Raiders (10-5)
Same Old. Same Old. Another year changes, yet nothing ever changes when it comes to the New York Jets. They have put themselves from a glorious position into a desperate position and its all because they refused to show up and play with any heart against a 2 win football team. And now to make it all up, all they have to do is go out on the road against a very hungry Oakland Raiders football team. The Raiders are hungry for a win because it will give them a bye in the first round of the playoffs, and because they need one badly after some bad football they have been playing in recent weeks. So to sum it all up, if the Jets cant beat Buffalo at home, I dont see how they are going to Oakland and winning this game. I hope Im wrong, but I dont see that happening considering the history of this franchise. So the Jets will have to pray for some Kansas City magic if they are going to make the playoffs, and in true Jets fashion and luck, I dont see that one working out either.
SCORE: Raiders 26 Jets 20
Denver Broncos (8-7) at Indianapolis Colts (5-10)
Two teams that were figured to be in the thick of things come playoff time, are closing out dissapointing seasons, that is true especially in the case of the Indianapolis Colts. You have to figure that this is Jim Mora's last game coaching this team which has thoroughly underachieved in the past couple of seasons. Denver has fought back recently and have fought off some key injuries this year, but they are not heading to the playoffs and thats not a good thing in Denver. I expect this game to be a shootout as both teams will just let it all fly and Ill take the Colts to win a close one here, but there is certainly no consolation for the winner.
SCORE: Colts 35 Broncos 31
Arizona Cardinals (7-8) at Washington Redskins (7-8)
Well the winner of this game finishes at .500, which I guess is a good thing considering the circumstances. Any year the Cardinals dont finish with a losing record is a good year, and considering that the Redskins started out 0-5, an 8-8 finish isnt that bad. Expect this game to be competitive and Ill take the Skins to win it on a late Field Goal and get some momentum building into what can be a bounce back year for them next year.
SCORE: Redskins 20 Cardinals 17
Cincinnati Bengals (5-10) at Tennessee Titans (7-8)
The Titans close out what has been a very dissapointing year against a team that is certainly no stranger to dissapointing years, the Bengals. The Bengals had the highlite of their season when they beat the AFC Frontrunners Pittsburgh last week. Now that they got that high out of their way, its time for them to pack it in and look forward to calling the season an end. The Titans would like to bounce back and get to .500 in what has been a dissapointing season for this team that was making its mark as one of the top franchises in the NFL. Expect the Titans to pound the Bengals.
Dallas Cowboys (5-10) at Detroit Lions (1-14)
The Cowboys head onto the road as a favorite. Who would have thought that would happen this year. The Lions finish off a nightmare season at home and its time for them to get another win. The Cowboys are coming off an emotional high after beating The Niners last week, their letdown occurs at the Silver Dome as the Lions will finish out a miserable season with a victory.
SCORE: Lions 26 Cowboys 21
New England Patriots (10-5) at Carolina Panthers (1-14)
The surprise team in the AFC so far has been the Patriots by far. And now a win against lowly Carolina gives the Patriots a Division Title. What an accomplishment for a team that was expected to do very little this year, especially once Drew Bledsoe went out. But hold on, Not so fast. Im taking Carolina here. Carolina is looking to bookend the season. Winning its First Game of the season, losing the next 14, and then finishing off with a victory. I see that happening. The Patriots had a week off, and maybe pressure of success will finally get to the Pats. They are no longer sneaking up on people, and it would give the Panthers great joy and some consolation to play a spoiler here. The Panthers played awful last week at home against Arizona, but just 2 weeks ago they stood in toe to toe with the Rams. Im taking the Panthers to get an upset and cost the Patriots a Division Title.
SCORE: Panthers 23 Patriots 17
San Francisco 49ers (11-4) at New Orleans Saints (7-8)
The Niners came down to Earth a bit last week with a dissapointing loss to the Cowboys that may hurt their playoff positioning, while the Saints followed up an embarassing loss to Tampa Bay, with an even more embarassing loss to the Redskins. The Saints have to be the most dissapointing team in the league, and Jim Hasslet may have done wonders with this team a year ago, but he has done an awful job with this team this year. People were picking this team to go to the Super Bowl, and now they are an under .500 team, and are giving up 40+ points a week. They obviously did not show up to play last week against Washington. There is no excuse for that pounding, and another pounding is coming this week. Theres too much on the line for the Niners to slip up again, they will get by the down and out Saints.
SCORE: 49ers 30 Saints 22
Jacksonville Jaguars (6-9) at Chicago Bears (12-3)
The Bears better not get too cocky now, they have things in their own hands but they better not make the same mistake the Jets made and not respect their opponent. Jacksonville has won 3 straight road games and are not going to be a team that will roll over for the Bears. But the Bears defense is so good that no matter what the situation is, the Bears will have a chance to win it and they will, which will miraculously give them a 13-3 record and the NFC Central Division Title.
SCORE: Bears 17 Jaguars 12
Cleveland Browns (7-8) at Pittsburgh Steelers (12-3)
The Steelers got comfortable with their prosperity in the AFC and they took a game off last week in a loss to the Bengals. Dont expect that to happen again. Sure the Steelers have Home Field wrapped up in the playoffs, but do you think they want to head into the playoffs with 2 straight losses, to bad to mediocre football teams no less, and to have an extra week to think about it? No way, The Steelers defense will shut down Cleveland, and I do not expect Cleveland to get double digit points, may even be a shutout. Steelers win to close out a great season.
SCORE: Steelers 21 Browns 3
Atlanta Falcons (7-8) at St. Louis Rams (13-2)
It was amazing that the Falcons were alive as long as they were because I dont know how they did it. They are not a good football team at all and you have to give Dan Reeves credit for getting this team to be competitive. But the Falcons have fallen short against big time teams this year, with the excpetion of their win in Lambeau Field against the Packers. If the Bears win their game, which they should, the Rams will need this win to secure Home Field advantage throughout the playoffs, and against a down and out Falcons team, watch out. Dont be surprised if the Rams surpass the 50 point mark.
SCORE: Rams 54 Falcons 26
Buffalo Bills (3-12) at Miami Dolphins (10-5)
Unfortunately for the Jets not only did Buffalo beat them last week, but now they head to Miami this week. The Bills got their win out of the way, so they wont be as motivated to win this week as they were last week. The Dolphins arent the Jets, so dont expect them to no show this game. Dolphins win it, and quite possibly will win the AFC East Title.
SCORE: Dolphins 27 Bills 10
Kansas City Chiefs (6-8) at Seattle Seahawks (8-7)
The Chiefs are hot and they may be the best hope that the Jets have for them making the playoffs. I give the Chiefs a shot to win this game and I expect this to go down to the final minutes. But with the Gods against the Jets as usual, expect a late drive by Seattle to win this game and somehow get them into the playoffs, Once again, I hope Im wrong, and the good news is that judging by my predictions the past few weeks, theres a good chance I will be wrong.
SCORE: Seahawks 23 Chiefs 20
Philadelphia Eagles (10-5) at Tampa Bay Bucs (9-6)
This is the prelude to the playoff game which will take place next week. Only one slight difference. Instead of the game being played in 80 degree Tampa, it will take place in 20 degree Philadelphia. And thats all you have to know about whos winning these Football games. I dont see Philly's motivation for being in Tampa on Sunday Night. They know they have the Bucs next week at their place, so why risk anything or show off anything. Expect the Bucs to put out a good effort in front of the home fans and win easily, but next week in Philly may be a whole different story.
SCORE: Bucs 23 Eagles 6
Minnesota Vikings (5-10) at Baltimore Ravens (9-6)
Well Minnesota didnt even let Dennis Green finish out the season as he is already gone. The Ravens should win this game without a doubt, but the Vikings offense is good enough to keep it interesting, and this is a Prime Time game so I guess Randy Moss will decide that this is one of the games he wants to show up for. Ravens win it, and if Elvis Grbac gets hot and can find his stroke, they are going to be a very dangerous team in the AFC Playoffs, and could wind up at the same place they were last year, only this time with a destination of New Orleans.
SCORE: Ravens 23 Vikings 16

All that matters about this game is Emmitt going over 1,000 yards for the 11th straight year.

| HOLY MUTHAFUCKING SHIT!!! The Jets finally didn't choke. I can't believe this, we are Playoff bound! Am I dreaming? John Hall making a clutch field goal? The Jets winning a place they've never won? This is amazing. As far as I am concerned, the season could end next week and I wouldn't be upset.
Congratulations to the New York Jets for showing that they aren't perennial losers (well, not always at least). WoW!
We probably have to dance with Oakland again next week in a game that means ten times more, but at least we get to dance.
Go Vinnyie!!

He got that record & Strahan also got the sack record.
But the sack record is tainted because Favre took a dive.

Typical Cowboy fan raining on our parade. Strahan deserved it as much as anyone. And I am very happy for Herm Edwards. He seems like a good guy and it'll be interesting to see what the Jets do in the Playoffs. And how about the fact that the last MNF game might actually mean something? When has that ever happened before? FB, comment?

| Well last year the Titans needed the Monday Night win over the Cowboys to secure Home Field, and a couple of years ago, the Patriots and Dolphins played on Monday Night for the Division Title which New England won and then beat Miami a week later in the playoffs.

That gives me 2 exact scores for the season which ties my amount that I got last year, so Im happy about that.

His name is Mark Gastaneau and he gave Strahan a hug after the game. There is no issue!

| When Strahan had Farve near the sidelines staring right at him and pumped three times before throwing the ball, I thought that was an attempt to give him the sack, but the second one seemed fair.
Another thing just came to me. Aren't Jets fans glad that next week we will take the field at a place where we have lost only once this season (another team's stadium)?
Home games are good if we're consistent, but we suck at Giants Stadium.
edit1 - Yes I actually screwed up the spelling of Favre.

i should've furhter elaborated what i meant
i meant to say that he is the only person to say if it they cheated or not, and the fact he was applauding him for getting the sack record pretty much shows what he feels

| I think Gastaneau was just happy to get his name out of the record book and the last bit of light was on him. I was too young when he played and retired to know what he was going through but I still liked him as a player. All I remember is he was a psycho and when he retired more and more embarrassing things happened to him. Of course I'm mad that a Jets record was taken but if it means a little more peace for Gastaneau then its a good thing. Oh and I would like to thank the Jets for taking a few more years off my life with today's game. JETS IN THE PLAYOFFS, nice!!

| Back out to Oakland we go, and on a short week to boot. Three intercontinental flights in seven or eight days can't help any 38 yr. old quarterback.
But it ain't easy being 'Verde.
And the only place we can go if we win is Pittsburgh after another intercontinental trip back to the Big Apple.
Let's see how far that 7-1 road strength can carry us. Go Vinnyyyiiieee!!!
