Gonzalez agrees to $24 million, two-year contract with Texas
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Juan Gonzalez agreed Tuesday night to a $24 million, two-year contract with the Texas Rangers.

Gonzalez, who turned down two-year offers from the New York Mets and Baltimore, rejoins the team he started his major league career with.

The deal with Texas calls for a $2 million signing bonus, $10 million this year and $12 million in 2003. The Rangers will defer $4 million of his salary this year and $6.5 million next season.

Gonzalez turned down a $25 million, two-year offer from the Mets, who up until Tuesday night thought they had a chance to land the free-agent outfielder. The Rangers' offer to Gonzalez was comparable to the bid by the Mets because Texas does not have a state income tax.

``We still think we have the best offer on the table,'' Mets co-owner Fred Wilpon said. ``We wish him luck in Texas. I think he would have been great with the Mets.''

Texas said the deal is contingent on Gonzalez passing a physical, an exam expected to take place in the next few days.

Gonzalez, 32, won the AL MVP award with the Rangers in 1996 and 1998, then was traded to Detroit in November 1999. Following a down year with the Tigers in which his back bothered him, Gonzalez rebounded to hit .325 for Cleveland last year with 35 homers and a team-high 140 RBIs.

Two years ago, Gonzalez turned down a $143 million, eight-year extension offered by the Tigers. Gonzalez switched agents after the season and John Hart, then Cleveland's general manager, signed the outfielder to a $10 million, one-year contract.

Hart left the Indians after the 2001 season to become GM of the Rangers and has put the team through a busy transformation following a disastrous season. Despite signing Alex Rodriguez to a record $252 million, 10-year contract in December 2000, Texas went 73-89, finishing last in the AL West, 43 games behind the division-winning Seattle Mariners.

Texas signed Chan Ho Park to a $65 million, five-year deal to be its top pitcher. The Rangers also acquired pitchers John Rocker, Dave Burba, Todd Van Poppel and Jay Powell during the offseason.

Starter Darren Oliver was traded to Boston for outfielder Carl Everett and former 20-game winner Rick Helling became a free agent last month when he wasn't offered a new contract.
It's on AP so it MUST be true.

Mets fans, comments? Any comments? Any at all?!?

Fuck Texas, they will still suck next year. Other than that, i could care less, it keeps the payroll down. Now maybe we will wake up and get a pitcher via trade. Sign D'Amico already!!

What an ass. Have fun with A-Rod losing 90 games you tool. Oh yeah he really wanted to come here and play for a winner. What a tool.

You cant blame the Mets, they were actually going to go over budget and get this guy, but Gonzalez is a phony, so fuck him.

The Mets better not go after Bubba Tramell unless they are going to trade Donne Wall for him.

Gonzalez is a total asshole. While I am glad the Mets didn't sign him because it could arouse a premature "best team in NY" argument, he totally left the Mets out to dry.

Al Leiter and Mike Piazza and other Mets really wanted this guy to come and were willing to restructure contracts and other stuff and he screwed them all. It could be a good thing that the Mets didn't sign him - they can avoid becoming the Rangers of the East Coast - now they can concentrate on signing some pitching.

John Hart is the worst GM in baseball

They were scoring runs last year but had the worst pitching staff in basball, so what do they do now, spend for more offense.

They get rid of one medoicre pitcher in Helling and bring in another one in Park (played in the cavernous Chavez Ravine which puffed up his numbers big time). Dave Burba is a bum as is Van Poppel.

Hopefully for them, first team to 15 will win most games.

Everett, Gonzalez, Greer, Kapler, Ledee for three outfield spots, genius. And John "racist" Rocker and Carl "everyone's a racist and dinosaurs don't exist" Everett will create a giant ball of cancer in that clubhouse.

Met's fans, comments?

Yeah, Nasa, I've got a few.

First of all, the topic title really should be "Gonzalez dicks around Mets". Even though I'm a long time fan, I've been critical of Mets management when they don't give 100% the way Yankee management does. Here, though, I think Mets are Blameless. Gonzalez was being a dick with the "I really want to play for the Mets" crap. For once, I'd like to see players be honest. Roger Cedeno may not be the greatest player, but I appreciate him saying he wants to play for my team, and even took less to do it.

Best article on subject is in today's post by Tom Kegan. IN END, JUAN TAKES
THE SLEAZY WAY OUT

Not only does he give it to Gonzalez for not being straight, he also cautions Mets for not doing what they do way too often - over-reacting after losing the player they want. I don't want to give up 24 yr old Chen for Bubba Trammel. screw that. He couldn't get 100AB's here, Mets trade Donne Wall for him (total waste), and now all of a sudden he is worth a 24 yr old lefty who has given up less hits than innings?

I'm curious what happens now to Gabe Kapler.

We dont really need another big bat anyway. It'd be almost overkill. I was high on Gonzo at first, but then I realized it'd almost be overkill, and by last week I was hoping they'd take that money and get pitching, and I think they'll do that now.

The rumor on ESPN is they'll trade Chen for Bubba Trammel (like I said, they don't need a BIG bat, the lineup is sick as is with Alomar and Vaughn) and then use the money to sign Astacio and another pitcher maybe. I'd like that over getting Gonzo anyway. Pitching wins.

Typical Met fan comment. We've had a GREAT offseason, and just cuz we fail to get ONE guy after adding a few great players, you think this offseason is a failure. Geez, as a group, us Met fans are pretty pathetic in that we're never happy, especially when we should be ECSTATIC. Most team's fans would KILL to have the offseason we've had. And if we get a couple pitchers, we should be favorites to win the NL, but hey, don't tell a Met fan that.
