O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | January 23, 2002 -- Bobby Valentine, John Franco and Al Leiter praised the extensive roster renovations GM Steve Phillips has undertaken this offseason. Yet, they see one missing piece to complete the overhaul. David Cone back in a Met uniform. As of yesterday afternoon, the Mets had made no offers for the free agent. But Cone certainly is being discussed extensively by team personnel. Franco and Leiter, both of whom are hugely influential with owner Fred Wilpon and Phillips, have lobbied for their pal, and Valentine has privately favored signing Cone, as well. In fact, within the Met hierarchy, Phillips appears the most resistant to signing Cone, apparently worried about the righty's durability. But Phillips initially was against pursuing Juan Gonzalez before the majority opinion within the organization moved the GM to make what turned out to be a losing bid for the free-agent slugger. Cone, who did not return a call yesterday, wants badly to play in his beloved New York, according to Franco, Leiter and another of the pitcher's friends. There has not been much of a market for Cone, who turned 39 earlier this month and has a dubious shoulder. But Cone, who earned $1 million with the Red Sox last season, probably would accept around $500,000 if it meant rejoining the Mets to pursue the seven wins he needs for 200. The Met plan, if they were to pursue Cone, would be to make a take-it-of-leave-it offer because they fear being used for negotiating purposes, a person familiar with the team's thinking said. But Cone apparently would need little time to mull a proposal. "I called him and asked him what he was thinking," Leiter said. "And he said he wants to be here." Unlike Gonzalez, Cone clearly wants to be in New York, having adored his time as a Met (1987-92) and Yankee (1995-2000). As a member of the Red Sox last year, Cone was not ready to begin the season due to shoulder woes, but was a competent 9-7 with a 4.31 ERA in 25 starts after he returned. When asked about Cone yesterday at a Met charity event, Valentine smiled and walking away said, "I can't talk about that." But people who have spoken to Valentine say he wants Cone. Leiter painted the scenario that Valentine favors, with Cone making 20 starts and recent Japanese import Satoru Komiyama making 10 as a way to preserve Cone's surgically repaired shoulder for the season. Jeff D'Amico currently projects as the No. 5 starter. He is 13 years younger than Cone, but like Cone he is a finesse righty with questions about the health of his arm. Unlike D'Amico, Cone has experience pitching in New York, excelling in the highest-pressure situations and leading in the clubhouse, all of which make him attractive to many within the Met organization. To open a spot for Cone, the Mets might have to trade D'Amico, whose reasonable $1.84 million contract makes that feasible, and/or deal Bruce Chen. But Chen does have an option remaining, allowing him to be sent to the minors as insurance should Cone or another starter break down. Phillips, who was not available yesterday, said Monday night after obtaining Jeromy Burnitz and D'Amico that the club was not likely to make any more major moves before spring training. But could Cone be a special case? "I think of David Cone now as like what the Mets did in 1999 with Orel Hershiser," Leiter said. "With Bobby, Orel [at age 40] won 13 games that year (to reach 200 for his career). David can win 13 games with our lineup and with how Bobby knows how to back off pushing a starter. And I know from talking to David he would be accepting of creative ideas on how he is used." Franco said, "I would love to have David. He would be great for our clubhouse and he would really add something overall."

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | Now, it says that the Yankees (actually Steinbrenner) are interested in David Cone as a long reliever and a spot starter if someone gets injured just to take him away from the Mets.

Psychopath Registered: Feb. 01 | Cone actually had a good year last year with the Red Sox and I'm sure we all remember hoe great he pitched against Mussina when Mussina almost had that perfect game. So, he could be a pleasant surprise. As a Met fan, I'm kinda torn over whether he'd be a good move. If he pitches like last year and is only a #5 starter at a low price, then sure, why not take a chance. But he could pitch like TWO years ago and that scares the shit out of me. I'd only sign him if that rumored Steve Trachsel for Rick Reed straightup trade goes through, because with Trachsel gone, we could afford to get another fifth starter and we'd have a pretty good, though not great rotation with: Leiter, Reed, Astacio, Estes, the platoon Booby V wants of Cone and Komiyana or whatever that Jap guy's name is Then, we could trade D'Amico and Guthrie for a REAL left handed set up man unlike Guthrie and our bullpen will be improved, keep Chen in the minors for backup in case one of our pitchers get injured and with our offense, that's a really good team.
