Williams nearly shot
Chrebet 2 years ago

Ex-Nets star wrote about incident in
book; cops investigate driver’s death

NEWARK, N.J., Feb. 21 — Jayson Williams wrote in a 2000 book that he once nearly shot a New York Jets player during target practice at his estate, where a limousine driver was found shot to death last week.

AUTHORITIES HAVE SAID Costas Christofi, 55, was killed by a shotgun blast at Williams’ Alexandria Township estate and ruled the death a homicide. Officials have not determined whether it was accidental, and no charges have been filed.

Williams’ lawyer has denied published reports quoting unidentified sources as saying Williams was spinning the gun around during a tour of his home when it accidentally discharged, striking Christofi. Authorities have not said who was holding the gun when it went off.
In his book “Loose Balls,” the former New Jersey Nets star writes about a summer day when he, New York Jets wide receiver Wayne Chrebet, New York Giants cornerback Jason Sehorn and other friends were target shooting at a range at Williams’ home. The book does not say when the incident took place.
“We were taking turns shooting the .50-caliber Desert Eagle, the most powerful handgun in the world,” Williams wrote. He heard something behind him and turned his head to look while firing the gun.
“What I didn’t realize was that Wayne was right in front of me, kneeling down to pick up one of the cartridges because he couldn’t believe how big it was,” Williams wrote. “So when I fired the gun, it must have been just a few inches from Wayne’s face, ’cause the noise knocked him out. Cold.”
He said he found Chrebet “lying there with gunpowder all over his face.”
Sehorn ran inside the house, and later asked Williams jokingly if his friends followed him into the house to kill him because of what he had just seen, Williams wrote.
Williams said jokingly to Sehorn, “Yeah, man, they sure would have. They would have had to silence you.”’
Williams also wrote about an upbringing in which his father would occasionally beat him as punishment and his mother once fired three shots at his father in anger over another woman. He admits to drinking heavily at times and beating up kids in school.

“Getting in all the scrapes I have got me a reputation,” Williams wrote. “And it’s not a reputation that really helped me. So the past few years, I’ve really tried to behave better, to give people room, to stay away from violence and guns and stuff. And it’s worked.”
On Feb. 14, Williams had hired Christofi to take several friends from a charity sporting event featuring the Harlem Globetrotters in Bethlehem, Pa., to a restaurant, and then to Williams’ home, about 30 miles northwest of Trenton. Christofi was found shot to death in a bedroom at the estate.
Williams’ lawyer, Joseph Hayden, has not returned telephone messages left by the AP for several days. Williams’ home telephone number was disconnected two days ago. Acting Hunterdon County Prosecutor Steven C. Lember did not immediately return a telephone call Thursday.

Jayson Williams, who was among the NBA’s best rebounders before leg injuries ended his basketball career in 1999, now works for NBC Sports as an NBA studio analyst.
A spokeswoman for NBC Sports said no announcement has been made on whether Williams will be part of the next NBC basketball telecast March 3.
