The gregarious announcer agreed to a four-year deal with ABC and will team with veteran play-by-play man Al Michaels to form a two-man booth on the show, two industry sources told The Associated Press on Thursday on condition of anonymity. ABC scheduled a conference call later Thursday to make the announcement. Madden had one year remaining on his contract with Fox Sports, but that network agreed late Wednesday to free him from that deal. He and ABC then quickly finished hammering out a contract which is worth about $5 million per season, one of the sources said. Madden could wind up making much more from the marketing opportunities that will arise thanks to his weekly prime-time appearances on ABC. Madden's arrival almost certainly means the departures of comedian Dennis Miller and color analyst Dan Fouts from ``Monday Night Football.'' Miller was offered the chance to stay on the program in a minor role, one of the sources said.

| O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | Bad move on ABC's part in my opinion. I like Madden and all, but why disband Fouts and Miller from Michaels? They were developing a good chemistry together, especially Fouts. He was turning into a great commentator. Well, im sure that FOX will likely pick one or both of these guys up. Its not Fouts and Miller's fault that the games on monday night sucked this year. The year before, the games were great, and they did a great job covering them. I dont think this was done because of bad performances from Miller and Fouts. Rather, it was done so that they can get a big name in John Madden to get ratings. It will only work for the first few games, then if the quality of the games sucked like this past year's games, it will not matter who is in the booth. | O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | Personally I hate Madden. I think he is way overrated. I enjoy listening to Phil SImms and greg Gumbel much more than Madden and Summerall. He sounds like a blithering idiot. The comedian on O&A doing Madden is more understandable than Madden.  | ||||

| Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 70 | Anything in better than Dennis Miller. I would have rather they hired the deaf Rush Limbaugh instead of Miller as it was between those two a couple years ago. Second. Bob Costas has signed his soul away to Satan and NBC for his success. He would never work for ABC. The best thing about MNF isn't the changes, is that the SUPER BOWL WORLD CHAMPIONS NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS will probably have two games there.  HOW YOU LIKE ME NOW, BITCH??!! | O&A Board Veteran Registered: Feb. 01 | This is great, I hated Dennis Miller. You can't not love John Madden, he's an institution in the NFL. The only sad part is that Thanksgiving will never be the same without him in the booth.  I believe in the Faith... that can save me. I believe in the hope and I pray... | Psychopath Registered: Sep. 00 | Is this the first time that MNF has had a 2 man booth? I think it will be interesting to see how Madden and Michaels work together. Apparently NFL will be starting out the season on a Thursday Night ESPN game between SF and the Giants. Nice Back to Costas.
