He's not the same anymore, but at least he knows to hang it up and not embarrass himself (ie Hakeem, Patrick).

Robinson will play one more season

SAN ANTONIO -- San Antonio Spurs center David Robinson, hampered by a lower back injury in the NBA postseason, plans to play one more season before retiring, according to team sources.

Robinson, whose back injury may require surgery, has scheduled a news conference Friday afternoon to make his plans public.

A Spurs spokesman would not confirm that Robinson is making a retirement announcement but did say that Robinson will hold a news conference at 3 p.m. ET at Carver Academy, a private school started by Robinson and his wife a year ago. The school assists students in lower-income areas.

KMOL-TV first reported Friday morning that the 7-foot-1 Robinson will play out the final year of the two-year, $20 million contract he signed last summer. The team source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the report.

Robinson, 36, saw limited action in the playoffs after suffering a chipped disc that caused nerve problems in his back, legs, and foot.

He saw action in four playoff games, averaging 4.5 points and 5.8 rebounds in limited playing time. The Spurs defeated the Seattle SuperSonics in the first playoff round, but were eliminated by the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round.

During the regular season, Robinson averaged a career-low 12.2 points and 8.3 rebounds. For his career, he has averaged 21.9 points and 10.8 rebounds.

Robinson has played his entire 13-year career in San Antonio, where he has been the major benefactor for a private school for underprivileged children and a contributor to other charitable organizations.

Nicknamed ''The Admiral,'' the U.S. Naval Academy graduate served two years of active duty in the Navy before joining the Spurs for the 1989-90 season.

He was named Rookie of the Year by unanimous vote after averaging 24.3 points and 12 rebounds. With Robinson, the Spurs turned their record around from a league-worst 21-61 to 56-26, tops in the Midwest Division.

Robinson was the NBA's Most Valuable Player in 1995, a 10-time All-Star and the league's defensive player of the year in 1992.

He is the only U.S. basketball player to win three Olympic medals, and in 1997, he was named one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history.

I'm glad he's going out with a bit of dignity (unlike Ewing). The guy has always shown himself to be a class act.

I hope for his sake the Spurs can dig down and play with some real heart next year to send him out with a great season, and possible a shot at the title.
