AP -The New Jersey Devils fired coach Kevin Constantine and hired Pat Burns to replace him on Thursday, just over a month after the team was eliminated in the first round of the NHL playoffs. Burns, fired as Boston Bruins coach eight games into the 2000-01 season, takes over a club that finished sixth in the Eastern Conference at 41-28-9-4. The Devils' 95 points were 16 fewer than the previous season when they were the conference's best team. The team's inconsistent performance led to the firing of coach Larry Robinson in late January and the hiring of Constantine.  2002 Crack Committee Objectives: (modified version)(You gotta try and believe....) 1.Hate the Braves with PASSION and extreme prejudice 1a. Try and go a week without having to punch a wall in frustration after watching the Mets play 2. 90 Wins and somehow get the Mets into playoffs this year 3. | O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | It took the Rangers 2 Months to hire a coach, it took the Devils 2 minutes. You have a bad 2 weeks as a Devil coach you get fired, it doesnt matter if the team is 1st overall in the conference (Ftorak, Robinson) You have 2 bad years with the Rangers and underachieve dramatically, you still stay as the coach (Muckler, Lowe) You have been the best team in the Eastern Conference over the past 5 years if your the Devils, You havent made the playoffs in the last 5 years if your the Rangers. Sad but true.  | ||||

| O&A Board Regular Registered: Nov. 00 | i was pretty surprised by this move constantine didnt even get a full season to see what he was capable of and Ftorek is not a good coach by any means. i learned that in 99 and bruins fans learned that this year and larry fell victim to a team that didnt feel they should follow a formidable gameplan anymore

Steinbrenner is all about winning, he knows the sellouts will come if you win. what do the nets, yankees and devils have in common? they are all owned or partially owned by steinbrenner and they all have been in the championship round in the last two years and 2 have won it. Cablevision on the other hand is clueless thats why cablevision teams get worse and worse bec they care about selling out the stadium first and winning second.
