Psychopath Registered: Jan. 02 | I agree with the first 2 .... I think players should have contracts that stipulate they get paid but how much is taken in at the gate because how false it will be they will then have to care about the fans .... The Curse shall be lifted .... If there isn't a strike!!

Psychopath Registered: Mar. 02 | Istink, that made absolutely no sense at all. I seriously can't decipher what you're trying to say. I'll go out on a limb and support the owners. They are businessmen who have invested a lot of money and deserve returns on that investment. Players...are just that. They are PLAYING A GAME and getting paid MILLIONS OF DOLLARS to do it. That being said, I have no idea what the "reason" behind the imminent strike is. Flame on. AIM | E-mail

Psychopath Registered: Jan. 02 | I was just stating that MLB players should all get paid according to gate receipts .... they will then have to make it fun for the fans again or noone will come to the games .... this will never happen but it's just a wish .... I was also stating that them caring about the fans will be fake because it will still be about the money .... The Curse shall be lifted .... If there isn't a strike!!

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | PlasticMan, while I say that both sides should rot, (or grow brains), I couldn't disagree with you more. It is the players people pay to see, not owners. Would you rather see Randy Johnson pitch to Barry Bonds in a sandlot, or see A-ball talented players play in Camden Yards? The "they are PLAYING A GAME and getting paid MILLIONS OF DOLLARS to do it." argument is as spurious as it gets. They are entertainers. Musicians get paid multi-millions to entertain, Movie Stars get paid to entertain, why is it that Ballplayers "just play a game"? At least they have a talent, unlike many millionaires who were just lucky to be born to the right family. 2002 Crack Committee Objectives: (modified version)(You gotta try and believe....) 1.Hate the Braves with PASSION and extreme prejudice 1a. Try and go a week without having to punch a wall in frustration after watching the Mets play 2. 90 Wins and somehow get the Mets into playoffs this year 3. All 5 Starters have winning records this year 3a.Have team understand it is OK to get a hit with runners on base. 4. Mets win World Series (after divine intervention)

Psychopath Registered: Mar. 02 | Peter, you're welcome to disagree with me. I figured more people than just you would. I will give you, as a counter-point, other sports stars as a reference. I DON'T have numbers right in front of me (I need to start researching my points, occasionally), but I'd be willing to be the average yearly salary for Baseball is higher than any other sport. Why? I say it has nothing to do with relative skill, or relative fan draw, or the impact one player can have on the outcome of the game/season. Rather, it's the fact that in America, we romanticize baseball to the point where the players BELIEVE they are heros and legends, and that common sense and reality don't really apply to them. Psychopath Registered: Mar. 02 | Niether. THE PLAYERS: For a group of people that threw a hissy fit about the idea of a team or two of thier peers being contracted out of jobs, these guys do not help the situation. They demand more and more money and price themselves right out of the small market clubs. Those clubs must do one of two things. Keep big names and run at or close to a loss, or trade talent constantly for cheaper players and put out sub-par product. The players have every right to try to get as much money as possible, but they shouldn't bitch when it results in the small market teams staying perrenial losers. That's hypocritical. THE OWNERS: They have blown many chances in the past to put a salary cap into place. Now it may be too late, because they let the player's assoc. get to damn strong. They are the ones paying insane amounts of money to the players. It's hard to take the side of anyone who prices themselves out of biz. by increasing thier opperating costs to levels that cause them to run near or in the red. The players demanded more, so the owners give it to them. Then they pass the buck to the fan through jacked ticket prices, ect... The fans in turn stop going to games because they would rather not drop that kind of cash on a single game, or can't afford to. Take any other biz. If a Circuit City went out of biz because they started to vountarily pay thier employees a min. wage of $30 an hour causing thier operating costs to skyrocket and drive them into the red, we would feel bad for them? Nope. We would all talk about how stupid they were. I am all in favor of an athlete getting paid well. I have no problems with them making millions. That said alot of these guys make more money than they will ever spend, and still get a pension at retirement. It's stupid, but to them, once you rise above a certian dollar amount it's about this juvinile sense of respect, and less about securing thier and thier family's finacial well being. It becomes ego. Then there are guys like McGuire. He turned down one last deal, because he felt loyal to the Cards and did not want to financially fuck them when he wasn't sure if he was going to play. That is what it is about. Baseball as an employer has been very good to the players. It has afforded them a lifestyle few can ever achieve. While some are classy enough to return the favor, it's sad how many show the game little or no respect.

Hanger-On Registered: Jul. 02 | Neither. They are both a bunch of self-centered, money hungry a-holes. The owners piss and moan all year about the exorbitant salaries, and yet...they are the ones paying them. The players are unwilling to compromise even a little bit. Fuck 'em. Neither side gives a rats ass about the fans. If it could be done, I say the fans organize and boycott baseball. That puts all of 'em outta business and good riddance. MLB sucks. Baseball as a game is still great, but MLB has ruined it. Thanks god for teams like the Newark Bears and the Somerset Patriots. - dsb - Let's DO IT!!!
