Rockies want to use Leiter as set-up man

Associated Press

TUCSON, Ariz. – Seeking an experienced right-hander for their bullpen, the Colorado Rockies acquired veteran Mark Leiter from the New York Mets Monday in exchange for right-hander Brian Rose.

Colorado had been seeking a setup man for its bullpen since Jerry Dipoto retired this spring, and Leiter might fit the role. In seven spring training games, he has allowed two earned runs and had 11 strikeouts in 11 2/3 innings.

Leiter, who turns 38 on April 13, missed all of last season recovering from right shoulder surgery. He last pitched for the Seattle Mariners in 1999, allowing one run in two relief appearances.

A former starter, he moved to the bullpen while with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1998 and went 7-5 with 23 saves and a 3.55 ERA in 69 games.

The Rockies are Leiter's 11th organization. In seven career games at Coors Field, he is 1-2 and has allowed 23 runs in 27 innings.

Rose came to the Rockies in a trade with the Boston Red Sox last July and went 4-5 with a 5.51 ERA in 12 starts. He was trying to make the team as a reliever after Colorado added left-handers Mike Hampton, Denny Neagle and Ron Villone to its rotation this winter.

Rose, 25, pitched only five innings this spring after missing the first week of exhibition games to be with his wife in Massachusetts as she gave birth to their second child.

"I knew something was going to happen," he said. "I felt if everything went well for these guys, I wouldn't be here."

Obviously the Mets werent trading Al.
But I hope this Brian Rose guy is any good and not that Mark Leiter is any good anymore, but you would like to keep your Ace Pitcher Happy and trading his brother doesnt do that.

Leiter's no ace. he has always sucked miserably when forced into the ace role. And now his "feel good, family" dream season is over. 12-14 for Al

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight, that's why the guy is a post season, big game pitcher who handles pressure and performs better than Maddux, Glavine, Clemens and Johnson...

Why is the room spinning???

Leiter's no Ace?

Then who is, Kevin Appier?

Sure Al Leiter is a really solid #2 Pitcher, but he can fit the role of the Ace well. He was the Ace in 98 and had a tremendous season, and he has looked very good this Spring so far.

OK, I guess it is time to show my true colors. Having seen Rose pitch for Boston many times, Brian Rose isn't to bad, he isn't spectacular either. He is a not bad middle reliever. He pitched OK for Boston. I think he will be better then Mark. Rose runs hot and cold. He will step up one game and be amazing and then pitch OK the next.

Can we get past April before we judge how well Leiter is. Sure he is 0-3 and pitched terrible on Friday against Cincy, but the week before against Cincy he pitched great and lost 1-0.

Al Leiter is the least of the Mets concerns right now. The only concern about Leiter is his elbow.
