O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | Knight grants a fourth player his release LUBBOCK, Texas – One week after being hired, Texas Tech coach Bob Knight kicked three players off the team on Friday for "some violation of team rules" and the school granted a fourth player his release. Texas Tech President David Schmidly said he does not receive reports on problems with basketball players, but added, "I'm sure it has something to do with some violation of team rules." Schmidly said he was unaware of which rules or what type of violations occurred. Dismissed from the team were Jamal Brown, the Red Raiders' starting guard who averaged 10.6 points per game, Rodney Bass and Brannon Hayes, a pair of freshmen reserves. Hayes said Knight called the three players into his office earlier this week, and the meeting resulted in a misunderstanding, which Hayes declined to discuss in detail. "It was just a misunderstanding in the meeting between the three of us," Hayes said. "All I know is I was just not wanted here next year. Personally, I think the decision was made before I even knew it." Brown, Bass and Hayes will keep their scholarships. Ronald Hobbs, a backup guard who averaged 5.5 points per game, asked for and was given his release from the program. Hobbs said his departure was planned long before former coach James Dickey was fired March 9 after the Red Raiders finished a 9-19 season. "Jamal might be taking it pretty hard," Hayes said. "Me and Rodney are disappointed in things, but we are young, very talented and have a desire to play basketball. I'm sure once this is out, some other schools will start calling. I guess I will just have to look forward to playing somewhere else." The news caught others off guard. "I was surprised to hear that," Hobbs said. "I thought I was by myself." Junior center Andy Ellis said he knew about the dismissals. Ellis and Brown are roommates, but many on the team said they were having difficulty reaching the point guard Friday night. "Evidently something happened that coach Knight didn't like or didn't want on the team," freshman guard Andre Emmett said, "so coach Knight did what he had to do." A team practice was scheduled for Saturday. Knight, who coached at Indiana for 29 seasons before he was fired for failure to comply with the school's zero-tolerance behavior policy, took over the Red Raiders last Friday. Another player, freshman guard Marcus Shropshire, said the team worked out twice this week, and all players attended. He said Knight has met individually with each player. Brown's mother, Claretta Evans, had not reacted positively when first learning of the possibility of Knight coaching her son. "If he did (choke former Indiana player Neil Reed), he doesn't need to coach anybody," Evans told ESPN.com on March 8. West Ark junior college coach Doc Sadler said he's still waiting for Knight to call the two players – 6-foot-10 Jamal Holden and 6-8 Billy Pharis – who signed with former Red Raiders' coach James Dickey in November. The two players are bound to Texas Tech unless they're not academically eligible. Texas Tech is actively pursuing recruits for its three open scholarships, but Sadler said it's odd that he hasn't heard from Knight and Holden and Pharis are waiting to hear from their new coach.
