Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 70 | New York 4, New Jersey 3 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RECAP | BOX SCORE EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) _ Guy Hebert stopped 38 shots and the New York Rangers ended a 23-game winless streak that spanned four years against New Jersey, beating the Devils 4-3 Saturday. Petr Nedved, Adam Graves, Michal Grosek and Sandy McCarthy scored for the Rangers in the game that featured the second-period ejections of Mark Messier and Jason Arnott and ended with a wild scrum in front of Hebert. The Devils remained one point behind Ottawa for first place in the Eastern Conference. Of course, the bitter rivals had to separated after the buzzer. The win was the Rangers first against the Devils since a 3-0 decision on Jan. 12, 1997. New Jersey was 15-0-8 in the next 23 regular-season games over the last four seasons. The Rangers eliminated New Jersey from the 1997 playoffs. Alexander Mogilny scored twice and Randy McKay had a goal for the Devils, who outshot New York 41-19. The Rangers never trailed after Nedved and Graves scored 12 seconds apart early in the second period. McCarthy scored on a great individual play on a 2-on-1 break against Martin Brodeur to push the lead to 4-2 in the third period. McKay scored a power-play goal with 4:12 left to get New Jersey within 4-3, but Hebert preserved the win. After Hebert stopped 14 first-period shots, New York took a 3-2 lead in a second period that featured a late fight that led to the ejection of Messier and Arnott, who got two game-misconduct penalties. The fight started shortly after New York's Brian Leetch was called for holding. Patrik Elias of the Devils and rookie defenseman Mike Mottau exchanged punches. Arnott came to help Elias, and Messier jumped on his back seconds later and got in a few cheap punches.(After Arnott threw 2 punches into Mottau's face) On the ensuing 4-on-3 power play, Mogilny put in the rebound of a Petr Sykora shot to cut the Rangers' lead to 3-2. It was his second of the game, and his sixth in three games. Limited to four shots in the first period, the Rangers scored on their first two in the second period. Shortly after Sykora hit the goal post short-handed, Nedved handcuffed Brodeur with a 30-footer for a 1-0 lead at 4:32. Graves quickly followed up with a bad-angle goal after he was set up by Colin Forbes, who also assisted on McCarthy's goal. Mogilny became the Devils' first 40-goal scorer since Claude Lemieux in 1991-92 when he swept around defenseman Tomas Kloucek and beat Hebert with a driving move across the crease at 7:49. Nedved set up Grosek right in front for a 3-1 lead at 12:45. ^Notes@: Both teams hit a goal post twice. Leetch and Nedved got iron for New York and Elias and Sykora did it for the Devils. ... This was New Jersey's second straight home loss. Pittsburgh ended the Devils' franchise-record 13-game overall winning streak on Sunday. ... Devils D Ken Daneyko played in his 1,144 game with the Devils, tying him with Bobby Clarke of Philadelphia for eighth place for games with the same team. Psychopath Registered: Mar. 01 | Congrats to the rangers. This gives them at least a little bit of pride. We can't win all of them. As long as we get to play for the cup, that's all that matters to me. And winning it of course. Adopted by Jon_Benet_Norton

O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | A Ranger Fans Dream Scenario: Ottawa finishes 1 point ahead of New Jersey for the Top spot because the Devils didnt get this win. EAST FINAL- Ottawa vs. New Jersey. Ottawa wins a tight game because of their Home Ice Advantage in a Game 7. That would be the ultimate. But i Rooooned It. I had work today at 4, so I watched the First Period, avoided knowing the score. I got home popped in the tape, While Rewinding it to the beginning. I was flipping through the channels, ESPN was on, and it was at 10:28, so they had their updates on the screen with the scores, and right at that moment, on the bottom it said, NYR: First win in New Jersey. Needless to say, I was not to thrilled to have it rooned, but Ill take the win.
