| NEW YORK (AP) -- New York Rangers forward Jan Hlavac sprained a ligament in his left knee Wednesday night and will miss the final two games of the season as well as the upcoming world hockey championships.
Hlavac sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee during the third period of New York's 3-1 loss to Carolina in the Rangers' final home game of the season. He will not play as the Rangers close out their fourth straight non-playoff season at Tampa Bay and Florida.
``I just got hit in front of our net,'' Hlavac said of the collision with Carolina's Craig Adams. ``It was knee on knee. I have a bad MCL, so I am out for the rest of the year.''
Coach Ron Low was stunned by the severity of the injury.
``To me it's bizarre, it wasn't even a hit. It's strange,'' he said. ``It looked almost innocent. It looked like he maybe caught a rut and spun as he was going to take a hit. I guess it popped on him.''
The injury, which will take 4-to-6 weeks to heal without surgery, will keep the left wing from representing the Czech Republic at the world hockey championships in Germany at the end of the month.
``I am very sad right now because I was excited to play for the Czech Republic,'' said Hlavac, who had the same injury to the same knee two years ago. ``I will probably stay here for four weeks and then go home.''
Hlavac had career-highs with 28 goals and 36 assists in 79 games this season.
The Rangers have been plagued by serious knee injuries all season. Defenseman Vladimir Malakhov, a key free-agent signing last summer, played only two games this season before requiring season-ending surgery on his left knee.
No. 1 goalie Mike Richter, who missed the start of the season because of offseason left knee surgery, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee Feb. 19 and was sidelined for the final 23 games.
Richter, who was the subject of trade rumors around the time of his injury, is expected to be ready in time for next season.
Rookie defenseman Tomas Kloucek was the most recent Ranger to go down before Hlavac. He tore both the ACL and MCL in his left knee at Atlanta on Sunday in New York's previous game.
Kloucek, one of New York's most promising players, is scheduled to have surgery on the ACL in about six weeks, which will give the MCL time to heal. His leg will be placed in a brace for six weeks, and rehabilitation is expected to take six months.
New York also lost forward Tim Taylor to a season-ending groin injury in December. Defenseman Brad Brown broke his foot on Feb. 23, ending his season as well.
