DETROIT – Brendan Shanahan and Steve Yzerman, two of the Detroit Red Wings' top players, are both out with injuries.
Shanahan, who had two goals and an assist in the Red Wings' 5-3 win over Los Angeles Wednesday night, is out indefinitely with a fractured left foot. He was hurt blocking a shot during the game.
Coach Scotty Bowman said Yzerman, the team's captain, has a low ankle sprain and will miss the next two games, in Detroit on Saturday afternoon and in Los Angeles Sunday night.
Yzerman played only 5 minutes, 58 seconds in the first period of Game 1 .
Bowman said Yzerman could not put his weight on the injured ankle during the first intermission. Bowman said he wouldn't say which leg was injured even if he knew which one it was.
"He has played with injuries before," Bowman said after Wednesday's game, "so once he said he couldn't help the team, then you've go to go with that."
Yzerman, who had 18 goals and 34 assists in the regular season, missed 25 games because of a right knee injury that required surgery. He also sat out two March games because of an injured groin.
The veteran of 18 NHL seasons has 61 career goals and 91 assists in the playoffs.
"You get excited for the playoffs and you gear yourself up and are really hoping for and expecting a big playoff run," said Shanahan, who had 31 goals in the regular season. "But it's just temporary, and I still feel I'll be back.
"It's tough to get sidelined like this. I don't think it's the end of the playoffs for me. I think I'll still be able to get back in the action."
