PHOENIX (AP) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers traded a disgruntled outfielder on Sunday -- Devon White, not Gary Sheffield.

The Dodgers sent White to the Milwaukee Brewers for Marquis Grissom and a minor league player to be named.

``I think it's a clean slate and everybody gets a new start,'' White said.

Grissom will make $5 million this season and next. White will make $5 million this season and has a $900,000 buyout at the club's option for 2002. So, the Brewers conceivably could clear $4.1 million from their books.

``I think this deal will work out for both parties,'' Grissom said.

White, 38, arrived at the Dodgers camp in Vero Beach, Fla., on Tuesday and asked to be traded. Earlier, Sheffield said he wanted either a new contract or a new deal from Los Angeles.

White apparently was unhappy that the Dodgers planned to use him as a fourth outfielder -- but that's precisely what the Brewers intend to do.

``I just spoke with him and he's excited about coming to Milwaukee and Miller Park. We expect him to be a solid fourth outfielder,'' Brewers general manager Dean Taylor said.

Of course, White could still end up starting if the Brewers were to trade Jeromy Burnitz, who is entering the final year of his four-year, $14.5 million contract.

``This deal has nothing to do with Jeromy Burnitz,'' Taylor insisted. ``Jeromy Burnitz is our right fielder.''

Burnitz nixed a trade to the San Diego Padres this winter because he wanted a contract that would pay him around $9 million a year. He has said he doesn't plan to negotiate during the season and surmises he'll be traded by the July 31 deadline.

White is in the final season of a three-year, $12.4 million contract. He played just 47 games last year and suffered a partial tear to his left rotator cuff on while diving for a ball on May 2.

White said he was unhappy in Los Angeles because of bad vibes he got from the organization and the lack of playing time that followed his injury. He hit .266 with just four home runs and 13 RBIs last year.

``I've never been a guy that's had to make diving catches. But all of a sudden I got to L.A. and if I didn't dive, I wasn't hustling,'' White said. ``I ended up diving and hurting my shoulder and I tried to get back into the lineup and got my job taken from me pretty much.''

White is a three-time All-Star and seven-time Gold Glove winner.

``Any time you have a chance to get a seven-time Gold Glove player, a guy who can play all three outfield positions and who's a switch-hitter, you've go to do your best to make it happen,'' Taylor said. ``This will really shore up our outfield.''

White said he'll be content backing up Geoff Jenkins, Jeffrey Hammonds and Burnitz in Milwaukee, too.

``It's a clean slate and it's just a good situation for me because the young players the Brewers have, I respect. They're very promising,'' White said. ``I'm the old man, you might say, who might teach them some tricks as to how to play the outfield.''

White has 1,826 career hits in 16 major league season with Anaheim, Toronto, Florida, Arizona and Los Angeles. He's posted a .985 career fielding mark.

Grissom, 33, has been bothered by injuries since his arrival in Milwaukee from Cleveland in 1998. He said he's been told by the Dodgers that he'll have a chance to play more in their organization, though.

``I'm looking forward to helping them,'' Grissom said.

Grissom said he wasn't surprised by the trade because manager Davey Lopes told him the Brewers would shop him around after they signed Hammonds to a three-year, $21 million deal in the offseason.

Grissom hit .244 with 14 homers and 62 RBIs in 146 games last year. He has a career .273 batting average with 145 home runs and 663 RBIs in 11 major league seasons in Montreal, Atlanta, Cleveland and Milwaukee.

The players are expected to join their new teams on Tuesday.

thats pretty much a wash.
They are essentialy the same player.

Hopefully Sheffield winds up with the Mets, because Alfonzo, Piazza and Sheffield in the middle of the lineup is not too shabby.

Equal deal, but Banger being a Met fan, I don't see Sheffield coming to Shea.

The Mets have as good a chance as anyone. The talk now is Benitez for Sheffield and alot people dont want to do that deal, I say Do it!

Benitez is shaky anyway and you cant rely on him in the big spot. You get Sheffield and you add a HUGE Bat to your lineup.

But this is a discussion for another thread on another day.

Banger called it w/ them being pretty much the same player. But at least Marquiss seems to wanna be w/ the Dodgers unlike White, so it should help out team chemistry.

As far as Sheffield for Benitez, i can't see the Dodgers making that deal, not the Mets. LA can't just lose a bat that important out of the line-up and not replace it.

Word from the Brewers Sports Talk show out of Milwaukee is the White trade now gives the Brewers enough salary room to sign Burnitz to a contract extension. This should prove to be a good trade for the Brew Crew.
