| NEW YORK (AP) -- Jay Cross, instrumental in the development of a proposal for a $1 billion stadium in Manhattan, will be introduced as president of the New York Jets on Thursday.
He will replace Steve Gutman, who will become an adviser.
Cross will be heavily involved in seeking a new stadium for the team that never has had its own home. The Jets played in Shea Stadium until 1984, when they moved to the Meadowlands. Baseball's Mets were the prime tenant at Shea, and the NFL Giants are the main tenant at Giants Stadium.
The Jets' lease at the Meadowlands runs until 2008. Owner Woody Johnson has said moving into their own stadium is a primary objective.
New arenas in Miami and Toronto were projects orchestrated by Cross.
Gutman, who has been with the Jets for 24 years, will be at the NFL meetings in late March to aid Cross. He then will work two days a week for the team.
Gutman helped engineer the $635 million sale of the team last year to Johnson after the death of Leon Hess. Gutman made more than $5 million in that deal.
