| Probably the biggest concern among teams looking
at Yashin was his lack of heart come playoff time,
but getting the Islanders to the playoffs would
make him a hero itself. He caught a bad rap with
the Canadian press because he didn't like the idea
of playing in Canada. When he decided to leave
his country, he thought he would be in the US
playing for a big city. Instead, he went to
Ottawa and was miserable and the town saw right
through him. I don't care how much $$$ you make,
if you hate your coach, teammates, fans, and
writers, you will be the most unhappy fuck. So
let's ease off Yashin and see what he does to take
us to the playoffs before bitching about what he
does in the playoffs. I would've liked to see
Jason Allison from Boston come to Uniondale, but
this was a great sel

| There were a whole boatload of reasons why the fans, owners and his own players didn't like the guy though.
There were some real classics in there when he donated $1 million CDN (roughly $650,000 US) to the Art Gallery in Ottawa {could have been the symphony, it was a while back}, but then when a fuss was raised over the $100,000 salary his parents were getting in conjunction with the money, he reneged on his charitable donation which was a little cheesy.
I dunno, you just have to consider that he was in a small market, the fans are trying their best to support the team by selling out on a more than regular basis, and then they've got some punk ass Russian who comes to town and decides that because he put up good numbers and had a crappy playoffs that he should make more money and not honor the final year of his contract.
He really is seen as a pretty big dick, and justifably so. However, he's oozing with talent, and hopefully for you Isles fans out there, Mike Peca will provide the leadership that Yashin lacks, while keeping the guy in line.

| The fans hated him because he got a bad rap from
the media. The Isles can afford to pay him no
matter his demands, the Sens cannot. Yes, the
Sens are a successful team that sells out, but the
taxes in Canada murder their teams in the cash
department as well as the players who live t

| Yep, the punitive taxation rates kill NHL teams in Canada (the Canadiens for instance pay more in municiple taxes for the Molson Centre than ALL US TEAMS PAY FOR THEIR ARENAS - COMBINED!). And as you said, even worse is the extremely weak dollar, currently at 65 cents US. The NHL teams take so much money in at the gate - that's their biggest source of revenue. But Canadian teams are forced to pay their players in US dollars, while tickets are sold in Canadian dollars. It's a brutal deal.
Having said all that though, Yashin was still being a dick. I hate Canadian taxes, that's why I left, but the guy signed a fucking contract! Why can't anyone honor those things in modern sports anymore? He was making a lot more than he ever would in Russia, so he seriously wasn't in a great condition to complain.

BECAUSE HE HELD OUT.
In Canada Hockey isn't about the money, it's about the Hockey. When a player holds out up there, everybody gets pissed.

| FMDoug nailed it right on the head. If you hold out for more money, practically demanding to be a free agent while you're still under contract, you're going to be disliked.
I always wished that the owners could just decide to not honor their contracts whenver they feel like it like the players do. Picture it "I'm sorry Chris Dudley, but you sucked last year, and were not paying you the millions that you dont come anywhere near deserving."

Or the Reds paying Griffey less money because he only played less than half the season so far. "Sorry Jr. but if you don't play, we don't pay".

Well, that part I don't agree with because I think that if you're hurt on the job you should still get paid. It's like firing the kids during the industrial revolution who got their hands chopped off in the machines. It's just not right.
