One day after engaging in verbal warfare with manager Bobby Valentine and saying he wanted to be released, veteran outfielder Darryl Hamilton was designated for assignment by the Mets. The 36-year-old Hamilton is batting .215 with a homer and five RBI in 52 games this season as a reserve. Unhappy with his playing time, he walked into Valentine's office prior to Friday's games with the Atlanta Braves to get a clearer understanding of his role with the defending National League champions, who are struggling through a 35-46 season. Valentine, according to the manager and several published reports, gave Hamilton an unflattering and sarcastic appraisal of his abilities, after which Hamilton asked to be let go by the team, claiming he had been called "garbage" by the skipper. In the original lineup, Hamilton asked Valentine to remove him from the game and was later seen laughing on the bench during the Mets' 3-1 victory over the Braves. He told reporters he was furious Valentine made the original meeting a matter of public record. Hamilton joined the Mets in a July 31, 1999 trade with the Colorado Rockies. He batted .339 with five homers and 21 RBI after arriving in New York that season but was limited to 43 games last year because of nagging foot and toe injuries and had just one homer and six RBI.
