O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | DENVER (July 1) -- Joe Sakic, Patrick Roy and Rob Blake -- three stars who helped Colorado win the Stanley Cup -- re-signed with the Avalanche. Avalanche general manager Pierre Lacroix said the three signed multiyear contracts late Saturday night before the midnight deadline that would have allowed them, as unrestricted free agents, to negotiate any NHL team. Had the deadline passed without agreement, Sakic, Roy and Blake would have been among the most attractive players in the free-agent market. "I know this will come as great news to our fans,'' Lacroix said Sunday. "Joe, Patrick and Rob are three of the premier players at their respective positions in the National Hockey League, and we are thrilled that they will remain integral parts of our team for years to come.'' Sakic, 31, was the NHL's most valuable player last season, and Roy, 35, was the MVP in the playoffs. All three were All-Stars last season. Sakic earned $7.9 million last season and was expected to command about $10 million in the open market. Roy earned $7.5 million, and Blake made $5.267 million. The team scheduled a news conference for Monday to discuss the signings. The signings boost the team's hopes of winning a second straight Stanley Cup following the last week's retirement of defenseman Ray Bourque. Bourque's retirement after 22 seasons freed up $5.5 million for the team to use in trying to retain its potential free agents. The $5.5 million represents the difference between the $6.5 million Bourque would have earned next season and the $1 million buyout he will receive instead. The Avalanche failed to reach agreement with a fourth potential free agent, veteran defenseman Jon Klemm. Klemm's agent, Art Breeze, said last week his client had reached a stage in his career in which he was expected to test the free-agent market. However, Blake's agent, Ron Salcer, said he expected his client to test the market, too, adding that he wouldn't be surprised if Sakic and Roy did the same. "To have athletes like Joe Sakic, Patrick Roy and Rob Blake commit themselves to this organization and market before having a chance to be an unrestricted free agent indicates how special they are and how equally special this city and hockey environment is,'' Lacroix said. "Moreover, our fans deserve this great news after supporting us so well over the years since the team arrived in Denver.'' The Avalanche have sold out 295 consecutive home games, including playoffs, a streak that began shortly after the franchise moved from Quebec to Denver in 1995. After the Avalanche beat the New Jersey Devils in the seventh game of the Stanley Cup Finals on June 9, Lacroix said his goal was to reach agreement with all of the team's unrestricted free agents. Roy figured to be the easiest for the Avalanche to re-sign. He has said he would like to finish his career in Colorado, where he has won two Stanley Cup rings. Sakic, however, wanted a long-term, no-trade clause, and Lacroix has been reluctant to grant no-trade clauses since becoming GM in 1994. Blake, 31, who helped the Avs win the cap after being acquired from the Los Angeles Kings last February, indicated a desire to stay in Colorado, but only if Sakic and Roy returned.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Mar. 01 | Jagr has a better chance of winning if he went to the Islanders. :) But Jagr wants money..that's all, and Mario don't have it, so he's gonna go to the people who do. And although the Rangers suck and they will continue to suck for years to come, they have the money to spend. All Jagr will do for the NYR is make them mediocre at best.

Guarantee Yashin will be a cancer that clubhouse and Mibury could be the worst GM in all of Hockey. Yes, Rangers are terrible, but at least they are better than the Isles.
