Ripken passes Bell for starting AL 3B spot

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Seattle outfielder Ichiro Suzuki became the first rookie to draw the most votes and was among four Mariners elected by fans Monday to start next week's All-Star game at Safeco Field.

Cal Ripken, who will retire after this season, overtook Seattle's David Bell in the final week to earn his 17th start and 19th appearance. The Baltimore third baseman made up a 44,000-vote difference to pass Bell and Anaheim's Troy Glaus.

Boosted by paper ballots cast in Japan for the first time and online support worldwide, Suzuki received 3,373,035 votes and was the first rookie to be elected since Sandy Alomar Jr. for Cleveland in 1990. The 27-year-old right fielder leads the majors in hits and stolen bases.

The Mariners, with the best record in the majors, also will have first baseman John Olerud, second baseman Bret Boone and designated hitter Edgar Martinez in the starting lineup next Tuesday in their home ballpark.

The last team to have four elected starters was Cleveland in 1999 -- Roberto Alomar, Manny Ramirez, Kenny Lofton and Jim Thome. Had Bell beat out Ripken, the Mariners would have become the first team with five elected starters since Cincinnati in 1977.

Barry Bonds, leading the majors with 39 home runs, drew an NL-leading 2,140,315 votes. The San Francisco outfielder will be making his eighth start and his 10th All-Star appearance.

Giants second baseman Jeff Kent and shortstop Rich Aurilia also drew starts. They are the first NL middle infielders to be elected from the same team since Ozzie Smith and Tommy Herr of St. Louis in 1985.

Alex Rodriguez, who left the Mariners after last season as a free agent and signed with Texas, drew his fourth start at shortstop. Rangers catcher Ivan Rodriguez earned his ninth consecutive start and 10th appearance overall.

Also starting for the AL are outfielders Juan Gonzalez of Cleveland and Ramirez of Boston.

New York Mets catcher Mike Piazza earned his seventh start and ninth All-Star appearance. His status is uncertain, however, because of a broken toe.

The other NL starters are outfielders Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs and Luis Gonzalez of Arizona, first baseman Todd Helton of Colorado and third baseman Chipper Jones of Atlanta.

The pitchers and reserves and the rest of the 30-man rosters will be announced Wednesday.

Retiring San Diego star Tony Gwynn, who finished 10th among NL outfielders, is expected to be picked by NL manager Bobby Valentine of the Mets. New York Yankees manager Joe Torre will guide the AL.

Boone, leading the AL with 80 RBIs, Aurilia, Helton and Luis Gonzalez were elected for the first time.

Suzuki received 1,217,680 online votes. There were 716,325 online ballots cast in the final week after stadium voting closed, and a total of 2,231,137 ballots cast online.

Well Seattle has nearly 60 wins already, so these guys deserve it. The only one of the 4 who maybe shouldnt be starting is Olerud. But he is still quality. In essence, they are all qualified to be there

Ripken!?!
Damn man! The mojority of fans just don't get it.
The All-Star game is to display the best tallent
out there today. It's a shame that better players
are overlooked just because another player is
more popular. I mean, Brosius deserves the
spot more than Ripken.
I'm just glad that the managers get to choose who they think deserves to play as well.

what about troy glaus? the problem is that most fans see ripkin's name and say 'oh he was a great player, why not vote for him.'

its good that the managers can pick the reserves and select some of the lesser-known players that deserve to be there.

Whatever, all star games are for the fans. If the fans want to see a player like Ripken, they deserve to see him. Everyone complained when Ozzie Smith got an all star bid during his last season. Then he got a standing ovation at the game and it was a truly great moment. I have no problem with Ripken playing.

I'm not saying that Ripken shouldn't be there,
but I don't think he deserves to start.

mikeWOW, I don't mind so much that every team should be represented. There are a lot of players who would be otherwise left out because their respective teams suck.

i had the view for many years that if you didn't have the stats, you didn't belong their..i didn't like the fact that players were put in because of their popularity, not their stats. But then someone said something that changed my mind. This is the All-Star Game, it is a game for the fans. The fans don't wanna see some podunk journyman who is just having a good season, they want to see the superstars, no matter what kind of season they are having. You can't keep out Ripken, eventhough i hate the sumbitch, because he is a superstar, he is what people want to see. and this, afterall, is a game for the Stars

Better cal ripken than david bell...if bell had made it that would mean more than half the starters would have been mariners, and nobody can sayh that he was qualified. banger is right thought, 3 of the 4 seattle players deserved to be there.

i think guys like ripken and tony gwynn should be there. in this case though, i don't think ripken should start. troy glaus definately deserves to be the starter. he is a great player who is putting up great numbers, but for some reason, he gets overlooked by the fans.
