Hull expresses interest in Penguins

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com news services

The anticipated departure of Jaromir Jagr has the Pittsburgh Penguins in the market for a goal-scorer.

Hull

Free agent forward Brett Hull could fill that void.

Hull told The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that he and Penguins owner Mario Lemieux had an informal talk Wednesday at a celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe, Calif., and that part of the discussion centered on getting Hull to Pittsburgh.

"We had a beer together, and we talked about a lot of things happening around the league right now," Hull told the newspaper. "Mario's been a friend of mine for a long time, he's a classy guy, and I'm sure he'll go through the proper channels to get something done, if that's what Pittsburgh wants to do."

No negotiations have taken place between the Penguins and Hull's agent, Mike Barnett, although Barnett is aware of Lemieux's interest in Hull.

Hull, who will turn 37 in August, ranks seventh on the NHL's all-time list with 649 goals, one ahead of Lemieux. Since 1988, he has more goals than any player in the league.

Hull made $7 million last season and was slated to make the same next season, but the Dallas Stars declined his option. Barnett had sought for the past two months to rework Hull's deal to extend it to two more years, but talks never reached the point where salary was discussed.

The Penguins' payroll is set at $34 million for next season, a modest boost of $3 million, and the team expects to free additional cash this summer by trading Jagr and defenseman Darius Kasparaitis. But given that general manager Craig Patrick has 13 restricted free agents to re-sign, most of that excess figures to be gobbled up in a hurry.

Hull laughed when asked if the Penguins could afford him.

"I'd be a very reasonable guy to deal with," he said. "I'm a 650-goal scorer in the National Hockey League, and I can guarantee you that whatever I'll sign for, I'll be the bargain of the century."

Meanwhile, Kasparaitis is asking for either more money or a trade.

The restricted free agent says he's given a lot of heart and courage to the team and it's time the team pays some loyalty back.

Kasparaitis made $1.6 million last season and is looking for at least $2 million.

Kasparaitis believes the team will not have the money he wants and has expressed interest in the New York Islanders and the Florida Panthers.

hey Ranger Fans looks like if you get him & Jagr you might have a decent team next year

Lindros adds Rangers to list acceptable teams

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

TORONTO -- Eric Lindros has added the New York Rangers to the list of teams he would be willing to play for.

Lindros

The 28-year-old Lindros, a restricted free agent who sat out last season, has sought a trade since rejecting an $8.5 million qualifying offer from the Flyers last summer.

The former All-Star center was convinced to expand his list after talking with Rangers general manager Glen Sather last Thursday.

"We've been talking to the Rangers throughout," Gord Kirke, Lindros' lawyer, said Wednesday. "Whatever was said between Eric and Glen Sather was sufficient to enable Glen Sather to say that he was going to have a talk with (Philadelphia Flyers GM) Bob Clarke and see if he could get something going with Bob Clarke."

Lindros' decision comes as potential suitors St. Louis and Detroit made other high-profile additions to their rosters and as another missed season begins to seem very possible. Missing the start of the season would likely cost Lindros a spot on the Canadian Olympic team for the 2002 Games.

The Rangers, thus far shut out in the free-agency market, have long desired Lindros. Until now, Lindros has been steadfast in rejecting Sather's courtship because he doesn't want to anger Flyers fans.

"Throughout this that has been a major concern of Eric's," Kirke said of his client playing for the Flyers' Atlantic Division rival. "That is still something about which he has great reluctance and great discomfort.

"Eric wants to play in the National Hockey League and if Clarke tells him that is his only chance to play, then he's got to get by it."

The main obstacle to Lindros' return to the NHL remains Clarke, who has demanded equal value in any deal for the restricted free agent. Lindros' history of concussions has some teams worried about his durability.

With the Rangers desperately needing to add an impact player to their lineup, a deal should come easier than with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Lindros' preferred destination.

"(Clarke) has consistently said that he thought the Rangers was a good bet, something to look at," Kirke said. "He has been encouraging us to look at the Rangers for some time."

When he declared himself fit to play last November, Lindros said he would play only for the Maple Leafs. The Leafs and Flyers came close to a deal on a couple of occasions, but the potential trades fell apart at the last minute, triggering angry recriminations between Toronto GM Pat Quinn and Clarke.

When the Leafs and Flyers were unable to agree on a deal, Lindros added the Blues, Red Wings and Washington Capitals as possible destinations.

The Dallas Stars have also tried to recruit the 6-foot-4, 236-pound Lindros, but have been rebuffed.

Lindros hasn't played since a check from New Jersey's Scott Stevens in Game 7 of the 2000 Eastern Conference finals gave him his sixth concussion 13 months ago.

Lindros scored 290 goals and had 369 assists in 486 games over eight seasons with the Flyers.

Philadelphia has signed free agent center Jeremy Roenick to a five-year, $37.5 million deal.

Robitaille, like Hasek, wants to help Wings win Cup
July 5, 2001
SportsLine.com wire reports
E-Mail To A Friend!

DETROIT -- Luc Robitaille has scored 60 goals in a season, started an NHL ALL-Star Game and won the Calder Cup as the league's rookie of the year.

But like goalie Dominik Hasek, Robitaille came to Detroit for one main reason: a chance to win the Stanley Cup.

"For me in my career, I feel I've accomplished a lot of things," Robitaille said Thursday at a Joe Louis Arena news conference. "This is the best chance I've had to win a Stanley Cup."

Robitaille, a 35-year-old left wing, agreed Monday to terms with the Red Wings on a two-year contract. He spurned Los Angeles' offer of one year at a reduced salary to stay with the Kings.

Playing for Detroit means having great teammates, he said Thursday.

"There's just so many great players, and they're all character players," Robitaille said.

The signing was announced the same day the Red Wings held a news conference to introduce Hasek, who was acquired from Buffalo on Saturday.

"That's why I'm the happiest. First they get the Dominator, and then they get me," Robitaille said then.

Once Detroit general manager Ken Holland secured Hasek, he turned his attention to the other end of the ice.

The Red Wings needed to make up for the loss of major scorers after right wing Martin Lapointe signed with the Boston Bruins on Monday, and veteran left wing Vyacheslav Kozlov was traded to Buffalo in the deal for Hasek. Lapointe and Kozlov combined for 47 goals last season.

Robitaille, who earned $3.5 million last season, was surprised that he is leaving the Kings for the second time in his career.

Detroit expressed interest in Robitaille on Sunday when clubs were first able to negotiate with unrestricted free agents. The deal was hammered out Monday.

Robitaille played all 82 games for the Kings last season, scoring 37 goals and assisting on 51 others. Robitaille was the Kings' second-leading scorer and led the club with 16 power-play goals.

In his 15-season career, Robitaille has three 50-goal seasons and has made eight All-Star appearances.

His first eight seasons were spent with the Kings, before he was traded to Pittsburgh in 1994. After one year with the Penguins, Robitaille was dealt to the New York Rangers. New York sent him back to the Kings in 1997.

Robitaille has 590 goals and 648 assists in 1,124 career games. In the playoffs, he has 53 goals and 64 assists.

Blues add leadership, grit with veteran Keane

ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Blues signed checking forward Mike Keane, a 10-goal scorer for the Dallas Stars last season, to a multiyear contract Thursday.

The 14-year NHL veteran has won three Stanley Cups, with Montreal in 1993, Colorado in 1996 and Dallas in 1999. He's one of just eight players in league history to win a championship with three teams. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"Mike is one of our league's most intense competitors who knows how to win, especially during the grind of the playoffs, where he's a proven champion," Blues general manager Larry Pleau said.

The move adds to the offseason changes to the Blues' front line. St. Louis replaced No. 1 center Pierre Turgeon, who signed a free-agent deal with Dallas, with former Edmonton star Doug Weight.

The Blues acquired Weight, the Oilers' top scorer for seven of the past eight seasons, on Sunday for winger Jochen Hecht, center Marty Reasoner and defenseman Jan Horacek.

"Mike can play either wing, which will provide us with great flexibility position-wise with our core group of forwards," Pleau said.

Keane, 34, started his career with Montreal in 1988, joining Colorado in the 1995 trade that sent goalie Patrick Roy to the Avalanche. In 954 NHL games, Keane has 149 goals and 277 assists. In 189 playoff games, he has 33 goals and 36 assists.

Flyers sign Weinrich

PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Flyers have addressed a need on the backline by signing Eric Weinrich, an unrestricted free agent from the Boston Bruins, to a three-year contract.

Other terms of the contract were not released Thursday.

"We thought that we needed somebody who could play on the power play, who moves the puck, and who has some experience and some size," said Flyers president Bob Clarke. "Weinrich fills all those needs,"

The 6-foot-1, 215-pound Weinrich had seven goals, 24 assists and 44 penalty minutes in 82 games last season for the Bruins and Montreal Canadiens.

The 34-year-old Weinrich was acquired by Boston from Montreal in exchange for Patrick Traverse on Feb. 21.

After of 11 seasons in the NHL, Weinrich has 59 goals and 249 assists. He also has played for New Jersey Devils, Hartford and Chicago.

ST. LOUIS (Ticker) - The St. Louis Blues on Thursday signed unrestricted free agent defenseman Rich Pilon to a one-year contract.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Pilon, 33, gives one of the best defenses in the League a physical presence. He had just two goals and nine assists in 69 games for the New York Rangers last season but was second on the team with 175 penalty minutes.

"Rich Pilon will provide us a physical and aggressive presence in front of the net," Blues general manager Larry Pleau said. "Rich plays the game hard and has the reputation of being a consummate teammate."

A 13-year veteran, Pilon joins a defensive corps that includes All-Stars Chris Pronger and Al MacInnis, who helped St. Louis rank fourth in the Western Conference with 205 goals allowed last season.

The 6-2, 215-pound Pilon has eight goals, 67 assists and 1,736 penalty minutes in 623 NHL games with the Rangers and New York Islanders. The Rangers claimed him off waivers from the Islanders on December 1, 1999.

C'mon Rangers!! Unload the trash and sign Lindros(with a concussion clause)!!

WOOHOOOOOOO!! Kamensky is gone!!!

Jul 05, 2001

Stars sign free agent LW Kamensky

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The Dallas Stars on Thursday signed free agent left wing Valeri Kamensky, who was a major disappointment in his two seasons with the New York Rangers.

Kamensky inked a one-year deal with an option for 2002-03. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The deal was announced on Tuesday but became official Thursday, when Kamensky cleared waivers as part of his contract with the Rangers.

Kamensky, 35, collected just 27 goals in his two seasons with New York after signing as a free agent. The Russian averaged 27 goals in three seasons with the Colorado Avalanche from 1995-98.

Kamensky has 60 career points in 64 playoff games and was a member of Colorado's Stanley Cup-winning team in 1996.

The deal continues a busy offseason for the Stars, who already have signed free agents Pierre Turgeon, Rob DiMaio and Donald Audette.

Also on Thursday, Dallas named Bob Bassen assistant coach and Brian Poile director of hockey operations for its minor league affiliate in Utah.

Exactly! The Rangers unloaded all the crap (Kamensky), so it's time to re-load the arsenal and take the Eastern conference by storm!

But, I'm very disappointed to see Graves gone!

Hes a restricted Free Agent, meaning the Rangers are going to have to make a deal to get him, its not as easy as just signing him. And there is no way the Rangers should give up too much for a guy who is one hit away from being done.

Well, the Rangers could just sign him outright as a restricted free agent, and they don't really have to "make a deal" per se. But if they do sign him without a deal and sign him for what he's probably going to get, say in the $8 million to $9 million range - then the Rangers would be forced under the CBA to give the Flyers FIVE first round draft choices.

Lindros doesn't want to anger Flyers fans???? That pansy ass S.O.B.
should've thought about that LAST YEAR!! He thinks we're not already
pissed off?? That last shot to the head from Stevens really must've
screwed up his perception.....I say trade the whining little sorry excuse for
a superstar to some God awful AAA team for a bag of used pucks!! So many
times Booby (no, that's not a typo lol) failed to seal a deal and the Flyers
have suffered. Booby needs to just get rid of him now!!

UGHHHH Who does this guy think he is?? Wayne Gretzky? Who is he to
tell anyone what team he can or cannot make a deal with??? With his head
being softer than my pillow he should be grateful ANY team wants him!! I
let it go back when he was drafted, refusing to play for the Nordiques
because I thought his reasons were valid, but this is ridiculous. Booby
should trade him to the God damn Tampa Bay Lightning just to piss him
off!! Trust me Ranger fans, you do NOT want this guy on your team.
Seriously, would you really want a player that's 1. One hit away from being
a vegetable? and 2. A negative influence in the locker room?

JUST SAY NO TO LINDROS!!

okay I think I'm done ranting now :)
