O&A Board Veteran Registered: Feb. 01 | Of course.. because why would he want to win... ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA (TICKER) -- Home is where the heart is, and it is where Fred McGriff will stay. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays announced Monday that they had reached a deal to trade McGriff to the Chicago Cubs, but that the slugging first baseman has decided to exercise the no-trade provision of his contract and will remain in Florida at this time. Rumors surfaced at last week's All-Star Game in Seattle that the Devil Rays had agreed to send McGriff to the Cubs for infielder Jason Smith and pitcher Manny Aybar -- both currently in the minor leagues. The deal, however, was contingent on McGriff waiving his no-trade clause. McGriff was expected to receive a one-year contract extension from the Cubs at $8 million, the value of his 2002 option that becomes vested if he reached 500 at-bats. But the 37-year-old McGriff apparently wishes to close his career in his native Tampa, which was his intention when he was traded from the Atlanta Braves to Tampa Bay in November 1997. McGriff's decision is an obvious setback to the Cubs, who lead the National League Central with a 53-37 record. McGriff would have given the Cubs an extra power bat that would help protect slugger Sammy Sosa. Chicago has used Matt Stairs and Ron Coomer at first base this season. Coomer normally plays third base. McGriff has been one of the few bright spots for the dismal Devil Rays. He is batting .329 with 18 homers and 59 RBI. McGriff hit a pair of homers on Sunday in a 9-1 win over the Braves. McGriff has 435 career homers and joins Frank Robinson as the only players ever to hit 200 home runs in each league. Earlier this season, McGriff became the sixth player in major league history to homer off 300 different pitchers. A five-time All-Star, McGriff also has extensive experience in October, batting .303 with 10 homers and 37 RBI in 50 postseason games. He won a World Series with the Braves in 1995. Originally a New York Yankees farmhand, McGriff has played for Toronto, San Diego, Atlanta and Tampa Bay. O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | I think if it were the Yankees he would go, but the Cubs are no guarantee to make the playoffs. And even if they do, they wont go far. Sometimes, not often, but sometimes, I like the idea of a chick with a horse. | ||||
