I figured that, instead of making a thread for every trade that happens before the trading deadline, we could have 1 universal thread for all the trades, and discuss if they are good or bad for the teams involved. Please do not defile this thread either.

Anyway, so far, Andres Galaragga (i apologize for the spelling if its wrong) has been dealt to the Giants for some minor leaguers, Pratt is now a Phillie in a move that made no sense, and the A's, Rockies, and Royals wll make a 3 team deal with Jermaine Dye ending up with the A's, Nefi Perez with the Royals, and minor leaguers with the Rockies. Who knows, maybe McGriff will go to the Cubs after all. Im sure that there are more deals to come.

All I can say is that Pratt's gone, and not a moment too soon. I hope the guy they got for him will be more reliable.

I guess the Galaraga trade was for the best for the Rangers. But I like the guy, anyone who can beat cancer and be at the top of his game deserves to have a fulfilling career. Good luck Andres.

Speaking of which, I wonder how Lance did in France today?

News (AP)

The Houston Astros won the Pedro Astacio Sweepstakes on Tuesday, acquiring the pitcher from the Colordo Rockies in exchange for Scott Elarton and a player to be named later. Astacio was at the top of several teams' wish lists. The Astros also added reliever Mike Williams from the Pirates in exchange for pitcher Tony McKnight.

This will definitely help the Astros in the playoff race. It will be interesting to see how this plays out with their rivals, the Cubs.

Braves: Sanchez Coming to Atlanta

by Fanball Staff - Fanball.com
Tuesday, July 31, 2001

News
The Atlanta Braves traded two minor leagues to the Kansas City Royals for shortstop Rey Sanchez.

Views
Sanchez, who is batting .303, will fill the void at shortstop left by Rafael Furcal.

I think this is the last key for the Braves. They wont get anywhere in the playoffs, but i think they will at least beat out the phillies for the NL East now.

I was not expecting astacio to go to the astors.. i was expecting him to go to either Seattle or the dodgers or giants.... well looks like that trade didn't help out houston much nor did it help out colorodo... but the trade of sanchez to atlanta is a great trade for them... he will deffinataly help them out... now that furcal is out for the year they needed a SS bad.. & sanchez fills that void well

Indians deal for Expos speedster Bradley

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

CLEVELAND -- Needing an offensive spark for the playoff drive and a future center fielder, the Cleveland Indians acquired Milton Bradley from Montreal for minor league pitcher Zach Day on Tuesday.

The Indians, who have had their eye on Bradley as a possible replacement for Kenny Lofton for months, completed the deal about two hours before the 4 p.m. ET trading deadline.

"In Milton Bradley we are getting a top-of-the-order, middle of the diamond player we feel will have a major impact at the major league level in the near future," Indians general manager John Hart said. "He's a multi-tooled player who can run the ball down in center field."

The arrival of the 23-year-old Bradley appears to indicate that Lofton's days with the Indians are numbered.

Bradley, who has been optioned to Triple-A Buffalo for the time being, can bat leadoff and steal bases, something that the 34-year-old Lofton no longer tries.

Bradley has spent the season shuffling between the Expos and Triple-A Ottawa.

In 67 games for Montreal, he batted .223 with 16 doubles, one homer and 19 RBI. He also stole seven bases before being sent down on June 23.

With the Lynx, Bradley batted .272 with two homers and 13 RBI while stealing 14 bases and getting caught just once.

Bradley also has a reputation for being an aggressive player with some attitude.

In 1999, he batted .329 at Double-A Harrisburg but was also suspended for seven games that season for triggering a benches-clearing brawl after being hit by a pitch.

He finished that year in style, however, by hitting a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the ninth as Harrisburg beat Norwich 12-11 in the deciding Game 5 of the Eastern League final.

Day, 23, was acquired from the Yankees along with right-hander Jake Westbrook on July 25 last season to complete the deal that sent David Justice to New York for Ricky Ledee.

The right-hander went 9-10 with a 3.10 ERA this season at Double-A Akron, and was 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in one start for Buffalo.

The Indians are loaded with several young pitchers like Day, who became expendable as the club searched for the missing piece while trying to hold off the Minnesota Twins.

Lofton is in his final season under contract with the Indians, who exercised their $8 million option on the six-time All-Star during the offseason.

After a decent start, Lofton has struggled offensively and in the field this year. Once an ignitor with his speed and a .306 career batting average, Lofton was dropped to the bottom of the batting order by manager Charlie Manuel earlier this season.

But nothing has helped and Lofton entered Tuesday night's game batting just .240 with seven homers, 36 RBI and 10 stolen bases. Lofton led the AL in steals from 1992-97 and is the club's career leader in that category.

Hart, in his final season as the Indians' GM, recently doubted if the Indians would do anything before the deadline. But this deal marks the seventh straight year that Hart has made at least one trade before July 31.

Red Sox: Acquire Urbina

by Fanball Staff - Fanball.com
Tuesday, July 31, 2001

News
The Red Sox acquired Ugueth Urbina from the Montral Expos in exchange for Tomo Ohka.

Views
Given the way that Derek Lowe has struggled, it is reasonable to expect that Urbina will at least share the closing gig in Boston.

This is a huge move for the Sox. Lowe was struggling too often to be the main closer for them. Urbina will provide more stability to that bullpen. Yankees might be kicking themselves for failing him on his physical, even though there is nothing wrong with him.

Doesn't matter who the red sox trade for, it's the same story every year. They come to the finish line steamrolling, then all of sudden they loose there balance, and then trip over there own F-ing feet only to fall a couple of feet before the finish line.......off in the distance they can see the Yankee's hoisting another championship trophy, GO YANKS!!!

good trade on both sides....
Urbina is a great closer but he was on a bad team... he should do well with Boston..

& ohka is the kid who threw the perfect game in AAA last year he will help the young Expos' he is gonna be a very good starter once he gets familiar with all of the players & the differant senario of the BIG LEAGES...

Dodgers beef up bullpen with Mulholland, Trombley

LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Dodgers, atop the National League West Division despite an injury-riddled pitching staff, acquired veteran left-hander Terry Mulholland from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Dodgers will send veteran setup man Mike Fetters to Pittsburgh, which has been one of the busiest teams at the trading deadline.

The Dodgers also acquired right-hander Mike Trombley from Baltimore for right-hander Kris Foster and catcher Geronimo Gil.

Mulholland is sidelined with a left index finger injury but is ready to be activated. One of the most versatile pitchers in the game, the 38-year-old Mulholland could step into Los Angeles' rotation or join Jeff Williams as the only left-handers in the bullpen.

Fetters, 36, is 2-1 with a 6.07 ERA and one save this season. Despite struggling and battling injuries in 2001, Fetters could become Pittsburgh's closer.

Trombley was 3-4 with a 3.46 ERA and six saves in 50 games. He will work middle relief for the Dodgers, who dealt former Orioles reliever Mike Fetters to Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

Trombley, 34, goes from a team mired in fourth place in the AL East to the first-place Dodgers, who began the day with a 1½-game lead over Arizona in the NL West.

"I'm happy about playing for the Dodgers. I hope I can help," Trombley said. "I know they're playing great ball, and hopefully I can do my share."

Giants add lefty Christiansen from Cardinals

SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco Giants made their fourth deal before baseball's trade deadline, acquiring left-hander Jason Christiansen from the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday.

The Cardinals got minor league right-hander Kevin Joseph and a player to be named or cash from San Francisco.

The Giants have added first baseman Andres Galarraga, starter Jason Schmidt, outfielder John Vander Wal and reliever Wayne Gomes in the past week.

San Francisco, on the heels of a four-game sweep in Arizona, began the day four games behind Los Angeles in the NL West.

Christiansen, 31, was 1-1 with three saves and a 4.66 ERA in 30 appearances for the Cardinals this season. He has held the opposition to a .211 average.

"Jason is a bona fide left-handed specialist," Giants general manager Brian Sabean said. "He will give us another proven option out of the bullpen."

Joseph, who turns 25 Wednesday, was 2-2 with four saves and a 3.44 ERA in 38 relief appearances in three levels of the minor leagues this season.
