| If form held, the winner of Sunday's Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway would be one of three drivers. And while Jeff Gordon, Ricky Rudd and Dale Jarrett have each won the Brickyard at least once, the odds of their success have less to do with experience than with the fact that each of the three previous race winners have then gone on to win the Winston Cup title.
But despite the fact that most people assume one of those three will emerge as this season's champion, Sunday's winner could well be a complete surprise. Of course, this year's winner could be a dark horse -- that is the beauty of sports after all. And as surprising as a Dodge victory might be to some -- the manufacturer has yet to win a race this year -- it wouldn't be entirely shocking.
"I expect that if they ran as good as they did at Pocono last weekend, they should run that much better at Indy," Greg Zipadelli, Tony Stewart's crew chief, said when asked about the rule change that allowed Dodge to lengthen its front air dam. "But if that's what [NASCAR] felt they needed to be competitive, so be it. It's frustrating because I think those teams and those drivers have already run better than they have in the past."
It's true that many in and around NASCAR reacted cynically to news of the rule modification -- most felt that it was, at best, curious timing -- but it's also true that the change doesn't necessarily preordain a Dodge win. Bear in mind that some Dodge teams tested at Indy a few days before the rule change; that is, as of now, those teams have no idea exactly how the longer air dam will affect their car's performance.
"It's the old scenario: Be careful what you ask for, you might get it," says Larry McReynolds, a consultant to Petty Enterprises. "There's no question those Dodges need it, but can these race teams that just spent two days testing there go home and kick that valence out and go to Indy and solve all the problems of the world? No way."
In that case, look for either Gordon, Rudd or Jarrett ... oh, never mind.
LUGNUTS
Jeff Gordon
Gordon is one of two drivers who have won twice at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In seven starts there, Gordon has finished in the top 5 four times and in the top 10 five times.
Dale Jarrett
Jarrett's record at The Brickyard is similar to Gordon's. He won in 1996 and again in 1999. Jarrett was seventh last year after qualifying fifth. He also has four top-5 finishes in seven Brickyard 400 starts.
Bobby Labonte
Labonte won the Brickyard 400 last year by more than four seconds. The defending Winston Cup champion is also riding a wave of success after winning the Pennsylvania 500 on Sunday.
Rusty Wallace
Wallace has the most top-10 finishes at Indianapolis of any driver (6). However, he has yet to win there. He was second to Bobby Labonte in last year's Brickyard 400 and second to Dale Earnhardt in 1995.
ON THE TRACK
Flattery
Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Bobby Labonte provided fans with one of the most exciting finishes of the year Sunday at Pocono Raceway. The pair engaged in a furious battle ended by Labonte's daring pass with two laps left.
Flag
For the second time in three weeks, Todd Bodine took the pole for a Winston Cup race. For the second time in three weeks, Bodine failed to crack the top 10. In fact, he was 43rd in Sunday's Pennsylvania 500.
Flattery
Bill Elliott turned in his highest finish of the season when he crossed the line fourth in the Pennsylvania 500. He gained three spots in the standings -- to 16th -- as a result.
Flag
Dale Jarrett picked a bad week to have an off outing. Two crashes relegated Jarrett to a 41st-place finish and dropped him out of the lead and into third place in the points.
IN THE PITS
Jeff Purvis ran away and hid during Saturday's NAPA Auto Care 250 Busch series race at Pikes Peak International Raceway. Purvis beat Jeff Green by 15.782 seconds for his first win since 1996.
Red Byron, the first NASCAR champion, is one 21 finalists for induction next year to the International Motorsports Hall of Fame. The Class of 2001 will be announced April 4.
Shawna Robinson will make her fourth attempt to qualify for a Winston Cup race this week in Indianapolis. She failed to qualify in Fontana and Chicago and finished 34th in Michigan.

| These next few races are pivotal in the points race. Hopefully Jeff can start to gain a bigger lead on Ricky Rudd and Dale Jarrett.

Gordon wins third Brickyard
INDIANAPOLIS -- No longer The Kid, Jeff Gordon is still a winner.
Gordon, who turned 30 a day earlier, celebrated Sunday by becoming the first three-time winner of the Brickyard 400 and solidifying his lead in the Winston Cup championship chase.
A two-tire pit stop gave Gordon track position and he took full advantage, passing gambling Sterling Marlin for the lead on a restart 35 laps from the end of the 160-lap race.
With a full house of 320,000 packed into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway -- many of them cheering for the former Indiana resident -- Gordon was able to control one more restart and stay out front for the 56th victory of his Winston Cup career.
Gordon started 27th in the 43-car field and struggled with handling in the early going. Robbie Loomis, the crew chief on the No. 24 car, said, "You start the race with a car as bad as we did today and get a win like this, man, that's special."
Marlin, running a fuel strategy that would have allowed him to run to the end without stopping, took the lead when all the other lead-lap drivers pitted during a caution period on lap 132.
Gordon and several other drivers took only two fresh tires and Gordon came out of the pits just behind Marlin. On the restart on lap 136, he drove his Chevrolet to the lower edge of the race track and raced past Marlin's Dodge.
After the last of seven cautions, Gordon won another restart with Marlin getting bottled up behind the lapped car of Todd Bodine. Gordon was able to cruise the rest of the way, beating Marlin to the finish line by 0.094 seconds -- about 10 car-lengths.
Johnny Benson and Rusty Wallace, who also took only two tires on the last stop, finished third and fourth, followed by rookie Kurt Busch and Ward Burton.
Steve Park, who was leading before the last stop and appeared to have the strongest car most of the day, wound up seventh.
It was Gordon's fourth win of the season, matching Dale Jarrett for the series lead.
With Jarrett failing to lead a lap and falling back to 12th in the late going, and Ricky Rudd getting hit with a mechanical problem that left him 39th, Gordon extended his series lead to 160 points over Jarrett and 179 over Rudd. Rudd came into the race second, trailing by just 45 points.
"At the beginning we were way of," Gordon said. "Most of it was being in traffic, more so than the car being off."
He said pit strategy made the difference.
"At the end, when we took two (tires), it was absolutely the perfect thing to do," Gordon said. "The car drove great once I got out front. This is the best way of celebrating my birthday."
Marlin, hoping to give Dodge it's first victory after returning to NASCAR's top series following a 16-year absence, was disappointed that he wasn't able to hold Gordon off.
"On that first restart, Gordon came up and hit me in the rear end and was able to just get by. My car was a little slow getting going on the restarts all day.
"On that last restart, if we could have got by Todd I think we could have worked on him a little. I missed a gear on that one and got too far behind. We give it all we had the last 20 laps and just came up short."
Gordon, who won the inaugural Brickyard 400 in 1994 and also took the 1998 race, averaged 130.790 mph in the race slowed by 28 laps of caution.
Park led three times for a race-high 39 laps, while Gordon led twice for 29.
After only two cautions for a total of seven laps last August, Sunday's race got off to a much messier start.
On the second lap, rookie Andy Houston's Ford spun and ignited a six-car melee in the second turn that wound up damaging the cars of Mark Martin, Matt Kenseth, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Robert Pressley and Ken Schrader.
Earnhardt, the son of the late former Brickyard winner, recovered enough to get back into contention and actually lead twice for 10 laps, but wound up 10th.
Rookie Ryan Newman, another rookie and an Indiana native, led early in the race, but wound up a lap off the pace in 31st after getting bumped into the wall by pole-winner Jimmy Spencer.
Marlin and Busch were both on a fuel strategy late in the race that made them the only cars capable of getting to the checkered flag without a final gas stop.
That strategy went out the window when a piece of debris on the track, right in the racing line, forced NASCAR to throw a yellow flag on lap 131. Marlin's car looked lonely on the track when all the other leaders dove for the pits the next time around.
"It was our only shot to win the race," said Marlin's crew chief, Tony Glover. "You can't line up eight or ninth and win the race."
