Geez, youre gonna need a stat sheet to keep track of all these football players that have died. It all sucks.

Monday, August 6
Jones, 35, collapsed on way to locker room

SALT LAKE CITY -- Curtis Jones loved football so much that he kept playing into his mid-30s, running the ball and anchoring the defensive line in a second-tier indoor league.

While playing for the Utah Lionzz of the United States Inside Football League, the 35-year-old Jones collapsed and died Sunday night after a game in Las Vegas.

"We're all in shock, as you can imagine," team owner Michael Curran said Monday, fighting back tears. "We're emotionally ravaged. It's a nightmare. We want to wake up."

Jones played tight end at the University of Utah and was an assistant coach at Granger High School in Salt Lake City, where he also taught special education. He played fullback and defensive line for the Lionzz.

"After the game, he just collapsed into the arms of some of the other players," Curran said. "The doctor who treated him thinks his left ventricle collapsed. They shocked him. He didn't recover."

Jones was taken by ambulance to a Las Vegas hospital as players prayed at the arena. Leslie Luke, hospital chief executive officer, said Jones' heart stopped by the time he arrived at the emergency room at 7:54 p.m.

He was pronounced dead at 8:04 p.m.

Lester Johnson, a linebacker with the opposing Northwest Fire, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that doctors told players that Jones died of a heart attack or aneurism.

Clark County Coroner Ron Flud said Monday that toxicology and laboratory analyses could take two weeks. He said there was no indication of foul play, trauma or any criminal activity involved.

Johnson told the Las Vegas Sun that no medical personnel were at the arena and said the USIFL does not require players to undergo physical exams.

A league administrator, Chris Boudreaux, did not return repeated messages left at his Las Vegas office.

The coroner said Jones measured at 6-foot-6 and 276 pounds.

His death comes on the heels of three others in the college and pro football ranks in recent weeks. A funeral was held Monday for Korey Stringer, the Minnesota Vikings tackle who died last week of heatstroke.

A Northwestern University safety died Friday following an asthma attack during sprint drills. A Florida freshman collapsed during practice on July 19 and died a week later.

"Maybe the Lord's putting a football team together," Curran said.

The Las Vegas Fire defeated the Lionzz 35-21 in a playoff game before Jones was stricken. The USIFL has six teams in Nevada, Utah and California and plays most of its games in Las Vegas.

Jones played for the Utah Utes from 1985-88, when current coach Ron McBride was an assistant.

"I didn't know until this morning," McBride said. "He was trying to catch on with some NFL teams. I had no idea he was still playing in one of those arena-league teams."

Jones, who is survived by his wife and four children, scored a touchdown just before halftime to give Utah a 14-13 lead.

"He scored for us going into halftime," Curran said. "He ran it 9 yards to the end zone, carried it in. He put us back on top 14-13. Then he played the rest of game. He seemed fine."

A spokeswoman for Santa Fe Station ice arena, where the game was played, said the 1,200-seat arena is climate-controlled and the temperature was in the low to mid-70s, so heat wasn't likely a factor in the death.

"I firmly believe that any man's finest hour - his greatest fulfillment to all he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out, in a good cause, and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious." -Vince Lombardi

"90% of baseball is mental, the other half is physical." - Yogi Berra

"There aint no odds against beating yourself no matter what the percentages are." - Rube Baker in Major League 2

Here's a guy who was playing out of love for the game. Just by seeing my name, it's obvious that I'm a fan of Arena Football and I've never heard of this league. Arena Football players make $60,000 on average. Their farm league, AF2 pays all players $200 per game and $50 if they win. So, if this league is smaller than AF2 we have a guy who went out doing what he loved and made less than $250 doing it.
