  Movies you really enjoyed
Posted by: fustercluck - 09-18-2008, 03:34 PM - Forum: I can't wait to talk about........ - Replies (50)

We have the top 5 movies and like most of you, my list changes daily. Let's start a thread on movies we really like.

I'll start with...

1. American Beauty - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0169547/

A great movie with an outstanding display from Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening. I'd love to quit my job, start lifting weights, and smoking pot all day. It would be like college all over again. Thora Birch is also one of my favorites.

Is anyone else getting sick of this?

Ok, so does anyone else get annoyed as hell when you hear the same segment 3 times in 2 days? I get the podcast and listen to the entire show every day. I effing hate it when i have to listen to the Mr. skin segment 3 times in 2 days. I would rather listen to how zane's colon is filled with DEATH, than have to listen the same effing thing over and over and over and over and over and over again.

Missing tours because of no Starwood
Posted by: biggun - 09-18-2008, 01:17 PM - Forum: Nashville Local - Replies (1)

I heard that some tours have been in Knoxville and Memphis (Avenged 7X, Buckcherry) but skipped Nashville, is there any other reason besides no Starwood?

  No segment 16...again (9/18/08)
Posted by: born2bone - 09-18-2008, 12:23 PM - Forum: Podcasting and other technical issues - Replies (4)

I really like listening to the local break, because I am from West Michigan. It gets annoying how they try and keep West Michigan toppics hush hush on segment 1-15. (I know why they do it, but it still sucks)

Anyway, so im pist about not getting segment 16, but im more pist about being BLUE BALLED in regards to the segment about who you think they guys will vote for...I was really looking forword to that!

  Cube, ladder, and horse
Posted by: Biff - 09-18-2008, 09:27 AM - Forum: Free Beer and Hot Wings Forum - Replies (15)

How did you do on this quiz?

My cube was 1 sq foot.
It was stainless steel.
My ladder was a Little Giant that was about 8 feet high in the "A" position.
My horse was white and very friendly as it approached me so that I could scratch it's snout.

What were your answers?

Purposely avoiding local content in syndication?
Posted by: cshbell - 09-17-2008, 07:22 PM - Forum: Free Beer and Hot Wings Forum - Replies (1)

I've been wondering about this for a while, so I might as well toss it out for discussion.

As the story has been told many times, when FBHW first got started on WGRD in Grand Rapids four or so years ago, it was a local-only-to-Grand Rapids show that had a syndication agreement with the show's previous station in New Jersey, and of course, it has grown considerably from there.

It's been my observation that the show seems to purposely avoid local content in the national (syndicated) portion. Is this done on purpose? If so, is it because of some part of the affiliate agreement, or just because the show doesn't think that local content will play out nationally?

For example, once in a while somebody will call into the Stump The Show segment with a question like, "How far from the I-96/US131 interchange is Kalamazoo," which is something that only makes the slightest bit of sense in west Michigan, and is a stupid question there anyway. FB, HW, and Zane usually cut the caller off, make a quick mocking comment about their stupidity, and then go on. It gives the impression, perhaps unintentionally, that they don't *want* any mention of their local/regional basis in the national segment.

I can see the merit in this, insofar as somebody in South Carolina or New Hampshire won't care much about what's going on in some other state.

On the other hand, though, west Michigan -- and Grand Rapids in particular -- is often a very amusing and curious place. Garrison Keillor has made a career out of Lake Wobegon, which though fictional, is mostly a playing up of the regional curiosities of rural Minnesota. Certainly to some extent, there are amusing, funny, and stupid things in Grand Rapids that would play well nationally.

The show has done some of these -- 'weiner poopy' is an obvious example -- but I'm curious whether anybody else has noticed that at many other times, the show shies away from mentioning where it's based out of.

I assume that this isn't a lack of pride on the part of the show; they said in a Grand Haven (Mich.) Tribune article that they were proud of Grand Rapids and wanted to make that known, and have said on numerous occasions that coming back to Michigan was something that they all wanted to do.

Am I wrong about downplaying Michigan content in the national/syndicated segments? If not, what's the back story?
