The entire crowd was transformed into a brotherhood of mullet-flying head-bangin' which didn't stop for three hours. It was raw energy full of teen angst, adrenaline, and Aqua Net. Most. Accurate. Description. Ever.
Although I've never seen a bad Metallica performance (and I've seen them 6 times) the Battle Creek show was the standard bearer. I saw them later that summer in Mears. Great show too. That was before they condensed the AJFA stuff down to a medley. They played the full songs.
I saw them again at The Palace, but it wasn't even close to the Battle Creek show. Kellogg Center Arena was nice and small, with a huge general admission area. The perfect venue.
